Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks a highly skilled CNC Machinist to join our fabrication team in Laurel, MD. You will set up, program, and run 3-axis and multi-axis milling machines to manufacture space hardware, undersea components, and flight hardware meeting AS9100 standards.

This role offers opportunities to learn sophisticated programming, work with diverse materials, and collaborate with engineers to ensure project success.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of CNC setup, programming, and operation experience.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM programming software, Mastercam preferred.
  • Proficiency in operating general computer functions such as email, file directories, and other applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Functional understanding of programming language (G-Code/Heidenhain).
  • Experience with vertical or multi-axis CNC milling machines.
  • Experience interpreting blueprints using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to obtain Interim Secret level clearance by start date; U.S. citizenship required.

Responsibilities

  • Setting-up, programming, maintenance, and operation of CNC and conventional milling machines with minimal direction.
  • Analyze and interpret solid models and blueprints to meet customer specs and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Perform in-process inspection using precision measuring instruments and coordinate with QA.
  • Collaborate with engineers/designers to provide fabrication insight and ensure project success.
  • Maintain proficiency with quality processes and ERP data entry for duration of work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
