Job Title: Manual Machinist Job Description

This role focuses on machining, reconditioning, and repairing pumps and rotating equipment in a shop environment using manual machines. You will work from blueprints and drawings to restore a wide range of pump components, including split case, overhung, horizontal, and multistage pumps, ensuring precise dimensions and high-quality finishes.

Responsibilities

  • Recondition and repair pumps and rotating equipment in the shop based on blueprints, drawings, and specifications.

  • Set up and operate manual lathes and vertical mills (including Bridgeport-style machines) to machine pump components and related parts.

  • Perform machining operations on split case pumps, overhung pumps, horizontal pumps, and multistage pumps.

  • Carry out line boring on pumps, including work on horizontal boring mills (HBM) when applicable.

  • Machine and finish internal pump parts such as shafts, sleeves, rings, impellers, heads, casings, and mounting faces for bearing housings.

  • Drill and face square plates, base plates, and other components to specified dimensions and tolerances.

  • Produce serrated finishes for flanges and accurately install and machine dowel/dial pins and keyways.

  • Work with parts ranging from approximately 4 inches up to 7 feet, maintaining extremely tight tolerances as required.

  • Machine components made from carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, and other common industrial materials.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions to determine machining methods and sequences.

  • Use precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers to verify dimensions and ensure quality.

  • Collaborate with welders, quality control personnel, and other machinists to complete jobs efficiently under one roof.

  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and follow shop safety procedures at all times.

  • Adapt machining approaches based on available equipment, including possible use of Vertical Turret Lathes (VTL) and Horizontal Boring Mills (HBM) depending on experience.

Essential Skills

  • At least 7 years of experience as a Manual Machinist in a machine shop environment.

  • Proficiency operating manual lathes for turning, facing, boring, and other standard operations.

  • Strong experience with vertical milling machines, including Bridgeport-style manual mills.

  • Hands‑on experience with either a Vertical Turret Lathe (VTL) or a Horizontal Boring Mill (HBM).

  • Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings for pump and rotating equipment components.

  • Demonstrated manual machining experience with pump parts such as shafts, sleeves, rings, impellers, heads, and casings.

  • Skilled in using precision measuring instruments, including micrometers and calipers, to hold tight tolerances.

  • Ability to machine a range of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and bronze.

  • Experience performing line boring on pumps using appropriate manual equipment.

  • Capability to work to extremely tight tolerances on critical rotating and pump components.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience operating both Vertical Turret Lathes (VTL) and Horizontal Boring Mills (HBM), not just one or the other.

  • Extensive background in machining pump parts for industrial applications.

  • Experience with turbine or compressor part machining and repair.

  • Proficiency in producing serrated finishes for flanges and machining keyways and dowel/dial pin locations.

  • Comfort working with a wide range of part sizes, from small components to large assemblies up to several feet in length.

  • Strong attention to detail and quality mindset when working with high-precision, tight-tolerance components.

  • Ability to work effectively in a small, team-oriented shop alongside welders, quality control, and other machinists.
