Job summary

ERM seeks a Managing Technical Consultant, Compliance Engineer in the Indianapolis, Indiana area to lead complex environmental compliance programs for multinational clients. You will provide technical leadership, develop compliance strategies, and guide projects across air permitting, hazardous materials, and regulatory audits.

You’ll mentor teams, manage budgets and schedules, build strong client relationships, and travel regionally up to 20%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or related field or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years of experience in environmental compliance, permitting, and auditing.
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
• Proven ability to manage multiple projects within scope, budget, and schedule.
• Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and building collaborative teams.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills for client engagement.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical expertise and oversight on hazardous waste, hazardous materials, and compliance projects.
• Manage project execution, including budgeting, QA/QC, and regulatory assessments.
• Lead development of compliance plans, permits, and reports (air, EPCRA, SPCC, stormwater, NPDES, wastewater).
• Conduct environmental audits and implement corrective actions to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Collaborate with ERM subject matter experts to deliver integrated solutions.
• Build strong client relationships and maintain scope, budget, and schedule expectations.
• Support ERM Partners-in-Charge and Project Managers in delivering high-quality outcomes.

What You’ll Bring:

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or related field or equivalent experience
• 5+ years of experience in environmental compliance, permitting, and auditing
• Professional Engineer (PE) registration

• Ability to travel up to 20% regionally and occasionally nationally
• Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area

Preferred:

• Certifications such as HAZWOPER, CHMM, or similar
