Managing Engineer, Biomechanics (Ph.D.)

Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Managing Engineer (Ph.D.) for our Biomechanics Practice in Seattle, WA. In this role you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of experts to solve complex engineering problems related to human injury analyses in various environments. This will involve evaluations of the human body’s response to applied forces during accident scenarios, including biomechanical accident reconstruction, assessment of human injury mechanics and injury potential, and characterization of human interaction with safety and occupant protection systems with consideration of potential injury mitigation. You will also execute consulting projects that involve the analysis of vehicle occupant protection system performance, safety assessments, and federal and state regulations. You will be expected to develop your own consulting practice and grow professionally within Exponent.

Key Responsibilities
  • Managing projects from initiation to completion; communicating project updates to team members, clients, and staff; ensuring deadlines are met and high‑quality work is delivered; and identifying business development opportunities.
  • Developing and growing the Biomechanics Practice in Seattle.
  • Attracting and developing new projects and clients.
  • Maintaining and advancing strong relationships with existing clients.
  • Building and leading diverse teams.
  • Mentoring and developing technical staff.
  • Providing project management and budget oversight.
  • Setting up and executing various test programs, including full‑scale vehicle tests and component or control system evaluations.
  • Overseeing inspections, testing, and engineering analyses of vehicles, accident sites, and other evidence.
  • Managing a group of highly motivated junior consultants and promoting Exponent’s multidisciplinary consulting expertise through publishing papers, presenting at conferences, and serving on advisory or scientific/technical committees.
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Biomechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 6 years of post‑graduation experience in human injury analyses.
  • Ability to generate business and manage client relationships.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Prior testifying experience is ideal.
  • Ability to interact with managers, engineers, non‑technical personnel, and clients and present technical topics in a clear manner.
  • Current legal authorization to work in the United States; no immigration sponsorship required.

Compensation & Benefits

Our consultants are rewarded for technical and business contributions and have an opportunity to plan for future success and career growth. At the Manager level and above total compensation includes base salary, an annual bonus, and a 401(k) employer contribution of 7% of base salary.

Base salary range for this position is $143,000 – $180,000 per year, dependent on experience and capabilities.
