Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. is seeking a Managing Attorney to join the Fort Apache office on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. The office serves Apache Tribe members in Tribal Court, in Northeastern Arizona near resorts and recreational areas.

The Managing Attorney will supervise day-to-day operations and undertake representation in criminal and civil matters in tribal court. Some travel to other communities, including on the Apache reservation, is required.

Qualifications

• At least five years of legal experience, including supervisory experience.
• Member of the Arizona Bar or eligible to sit for the next exam; able to practice in tribal court.
• Apache language ability is helpful.

DESCRIPTION: Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. is hiring a Managing Attorney to work in its Fort Apache office. The Fort Apache office is located on the White Mountain Apache Reservation. The office serves members of the Apache Tribe in Tribal Court (located in Northeastern Arizona in the scenic White Mountain area). The community is located near resorts and recreational areas, with outstanding skiing, fishing and hunting. Staff consists of one staff attorney, two tribal court advocates and support staff. The Managing Attorney will be required to undertake representation in a variety of criminal and civil cases in tribal court. The Managing Attorney will also be required to supervise day to day operations of the office. Some travel to other communities including on the Apache reservation is required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Applicants must have at least five years of legal experience, including supervisory experience; and be a member of the Arizona Bar or pass the next exam; applicants licensed 2 years in another jurisdiction may practice by special rule. Must be a member of the White Mountain Apache Reservation Bar or willing to become a member; experience in legal services helpful.
• Applicants must exhibit a high degree of sensitivity to the problems of the low-income community and should be able to work with low income and community groups. They should have initiative, good communication skills and the ability to work well in a multi- cultural setting. Applicants should be knowledgeable in the area of general civil practice and criminal defense in tribal court on behalf of the low-income community. Ability to speak Apache is helpful.

COMPENSATION

Salary range $58,656 - $101,915 DOE plus Management Premium of $10,000; up to 5% additional compensation available to individuals fluent in Spanish.
