Qualifications

• Licensed attorney in good standing in OH or WV, with ability to obtain the other within six months.
• Estate planning or elder law experience (2+ years).
• Significant management or supervisory experience leading attorneys or legal teams (5+ years).
• Proven track record of meeting with prospective clients and converting them into engaged clients.
• Strong command of estate planning documents, trusts, Medicaid planning, and probate.
• Systems-minded leadership focused on quality, accountability, and client experience.
• Willingness to travel among the firm’s four offices each month.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day management of the legal team, including attorneys, paralegals, and Medicaid staff.
• Supervise, coach, and develop associates through regular reviews and coaching.
• Monitor production pipelines and KPIs to meet drafting, funding, and Medicaid timelines.
• Review policies and client feedback to manage liability and reduce risk.
• Set standards for retainers, co-counseling, billing, and ethics compliance.
• Manage the legal department budget with executive leadership.
• Hire additional attorneys and paralegals as needed.
• Lead training and partner with operations to implement changes.
• Travel to each office monthly to support teams on the ground.
• Facilitate client workshops, convert prospects, and build community credibility.
• Partner with founding attorney and CEO on practice improvements and growth.

Job description

Trueline's client, a fast-growing estate planning and elder law firm with offices across Ohio and a new office in West Virginia, is seeking a Managing Attorney to lead its legal team. You'll oversee the firm's attorneys and legal staff, set the standard for quality and client experience, and help shape the firm's next stage of growth. The role pays a $150,000 base salary plus a quarterly bonus targeting $50,000 a year.

You can be based at any of the firm's four offices, in the Columbus area, eastern Ohio, or Parkersburg, WV, with regular travel to each location. The firm has nearly quadrupled its team in four years and plans to open additional offices over the next one to two years.

What You'll Do as the Managing Attorney:

• Lead day-to-day management of the firm's legal side, including attorneys, paralegals, and the public benefits (Medicaid) team
• Supervise, coach, and develop associate attorneys and legal staff through monthly 1:1s, annual reviews, file spot-checks, and meeting shadowing
• Monitor the production pipeline and team KPIs so drafting, funding, and Medicaid timelines are consistently met
• Review legal recommendations, policies, procedures, and client feedback to manage firm liability, and educate the firm on reducing risk
• Set standards and best practices for the legal process, including retainer agreements, co-counsel agreements, billing, and professional ethics compliance
• Manage the legal department budget alongside the executive leadership team
• Help hire associate attorneys and paralegals
• Lead attorney and staff training, and partner with operations to put law changes into practice
• Travel to each office regularly to support attorneys and teams on the ground
• Facilitate client design meetings and help convert prospective clients (about 20% of the role)
• Create and deliver client workshops and seminars, and build the firm's credibility in the community
• Partner with the founding attorney and CEO on practice improvements and growth

Must-Haves as the Managing Attorney:

• Active Ohio or West Virginia law license in good standing, with the ability to obtain the other within six months
• Estate planning or elder law experience (2+ years)
• Significant management or supervisory experience leading attorneys or legal teams (ideally 5+ years)
• A proven track record of meeting with prospective clients and converting them into engaged clients (ideally 5+ years)
• Strong command of estate planning documents, trusts, Medicaid planning, and probate
• A systems-minded leadership style focused on quality, accountability, and client experience
• Willingness to travel among the firm's four offices each month

Nice-to-Haves as the Managing Attorney:

• Active licenses in both Ohio and West Virginia
• Deep Medicaid, VA benefits, and long-term care planning experience
• Trust and estate administration and probate experience
• Experience leading a multi-office practice or helping open new offices
• Experience presenting client workshops and seminars
• Familiarity with ActionStep or similar practice management software
