Manager – STD and Absence Claims – Remote

Symetra is seeking a Manager to join our Short-term Disability and Absence Claims Team.

About The Role

In this role, you will manage a team of case managers who adjudicate short-term disability and/or absence management claims (federal, state, and company-specific leaves). You will direct and motivate your team to achieve results aligned with department goals, focusing on quality, timeliness, and customer experience.

You will develop strategies to improve departmental structure and procedures based on team performance, market requirements, and growth initiatives. You will supervise employees, provide guidance and mentorship on claim policies, time management, adherence to performance standards, and customer expectations.

What You Will Do
  • Analyze reports for trends and opportunities for improvement at team and individual levels; develop and evaluate plans for improvement.
  • Ensure data integrity and accuracy in the claim system; create new reports as needed.
  • Conduct claim audits and reviews to ensure quality and identify coaching opportunities.
  • Assign work, review ongoing work, and monitor workflows for timeliness and accuracy.
  • Review and approve claim decisions, including adverse decisions.
  • Collaborate with team leads and case managers to identify opportunities beyond reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and operational standards.
  • Maintain expertise in policies, ERISA, state guidelines, and claim practices.
  • Coordinate with legal department on complex issues.
  • Balance risk management with customer service using your expertise.
  • Represent the department externally as needed.
  • Support sales and implementation through broker/customer inquiries.
  • Educate field personnel on claim processes and philosophy.
  • Resolve issues to provide excellent service while managing risk.
  • Oversee staffing, hiring, performance, training, and development; build an effective team meeting departmental goals.
  • Develop staff in line with company and personal growth goals.
  • Promote industry standards and best practices among case managers.
  • Lead and participate in special projects as required.

Compensation

Salary Range: $70,600 - $117,600 plus eligibility for an annual bonus.

Who You Are
  • College degree preferred; High School Diploma required.
  • 5-7 years of experience in STD and/or Absence Management claims management.
  • 2+ years of management experience preferred.
  • CLMS certification a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills across organizational levels.
  • Public speaking comfort.
  • Proven project and change management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint; Salesforce experience preferred.
  • Strong reporting, data analysis, and trend identification skills.
  • Collaborative leadership style fostering a professional team environment.
  • Exceptional customer service, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills.
  • Some travel required.

Leadership development programs are required within the first year for new managers, including virtual and in-person training at our headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Travel and accommodations are covered.
