Job summary

The American College of Surgeons in Chicago, IL invites applications for the role of Manager, Special Projects & Rural Surgery Research Lead. This exempt position provides strategic and operational leadership for the Office of Inclusive Excellence research portfolio, with primary responsibility for rural surgery research, health equity, grant development, and national collaborations.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral or professional degree preferred; minimum master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • 3-5 years’ experience leading clinical or health services research.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary research teams, grant development, and national collaborations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Rural Surgery Research portfolio and establish infrastructure for Center for Rural Surgery Research.
  • Oversee synthesis of findings across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups.
  • Develop grants, research collaborations, and sponsored programs.
  • Lead survey development, qualitative and quantitative analyses, and dissemination of findings.
  • Coordinate manuscripts, abstracts, Clinical Congress presentations, and national publications.
  • Support Inclusive Excellence Certificate Course and educational programming.
  • Manage research OIE budgets, reporting, compliance, and project resources.
  • Mentor research staff, fellows, students, and collaborators.
  • Advise Office leadership on research strategy and opportunities.
  • Coordinate analytical planning with Biostatistical Team and data scientists.
  • Provide operational support for executive leadership activities and governance.

Summary: Provides strategic and operational leadership for the Office of Inclusive Excellence research portfolio with primary responsibility for rural surgery research, health equity, Encoding Equity initiatives, grant development, scientific dissemination, stakeholder engagement, and national collaborations. Leads development of the Center for Rural Surgery Research while supporting organizational priorities across research, education, quality improvement, and innovation.

This exempt position will report to the Medical Director, Office of Inclusive Excellence in the Department of Executive Services. It is based in our Chicago office and is a hybrid role: 3 days per week in the office/2 days per week remote.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $135,000 - $160,000 (commensurate with related experience).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Rural Surgery Research portfolio and establish infrastructure for the Center for Rural Surgery Research.
  • Oversee synthesis of findings across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups.
  • Develop grants, research collaborations, and sponsored programs.

Executive Operations & Governance Support:

Provide operational support for executive leadership activities while ensuring effective governance and organizational coordination.

  • Coordinate CEO and executive leadership meeting logistics.
  • Support Board and governance committee operations.
Required Educations and Experience:
  • Doctoral or professional degree (MD, PhD, EdD, JD, or equivalent) preferred. Minimum requirement is a master’s degree (MA, MS, MPH, or other relevant master’s-level degree) from an accredited institution.
  • 3-5 years’ experience leading clinical or health services research.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary research teams, mixed-methods studies, grant development, manuscript preparation, stakeholder engagement, and national collaborations.
  • Experience supporting physician leaders and executive initiatives.
