Software Engineering Manager, Applications (Hybrid)

The Observability organization builds and maintains the foundational systems that help developers and operators understand, monitor, and troubleshoot their applications and infrastructure. This includes end-to-end ownership of metrics, logs, and traces—covering ingestion, storage, querying, and visualization. The team develops SDKs and integrations for instrumentation, builds scalable platforms for data collection and analysis, and provides intuitive UIs and tools to support triaging and root-cause analysis. The goal is to deliver reliable insights into system behavior, performance, and health—enabling fast, data-driven responses to incidents and performance regressions.

Job Description
This role will be based in Mountain View, CA

At LinkedIn, our approach to flexible work is centered on trust and optimized for culture, connection, clarity, and the evolving needs of our business. The work location of this role is hybrid, meaning it will be performed both from home and from a LinkedIn office on select days, as determined by the business needs of the team.

The Observe team builds and maintains the observability platform responsible for metrics, logs, and traces. We create intuitive UI visualizations and effective troubleshooting tools using React, Grafana, and Go. Our mission is to help engineers quickly understand system behavior, triage issues, and resolve incidents with confidence.

Responsibilities:
You will manage the performance and career development of a small team of engineers, and own significant parts of LinkedIn products that require design, architecture, and coding.
You will participate with senior management in developing a long-term technology roadmap.
You will be a role model and professional coach for engineers with a strong bias for action and focus on craftsmanship.
You will work with peers across teams to support and leverage a shared technical stack.
You will manage teams to scale distributed applications, make architectural trade-offs applying synchronous and asynchronous design patterns, review code, and deliver with speediness and quality.
You will develop multi-tier scalable, high-volume performing, and reliable user-centric applications that operate 24x7.
You will produce high-quality software that is unit tested, code reviewed and checked in regularly for continuous integration.

Basic Qualifications:
BA/BS Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
1+ year(s) of management experience or 1+ year(s) of staff level engineering experience with management training
5+ years of industry experience in software design, development, and large-scale software engineering
Experience programming in object-oriented and/or functional programming languages (like Java/Python/C/C++/Scala/etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:
MS or PhD in Computer Science or related technical discipline
2+ years of hands-on software engineering/technical management and people management experience
7+ years industry experience in software design, development, and algorithm related solutions.
5+ years programming experience in languages such as Java, C/C++, C#, Python, Go, etc.
Experience in the design and development of performant, highly available, scalable web applications
Understanding of common performance patterns and anti-patterns in distributed systems
Successful track record of managing small teams of engineers to deliver multiple projects on time and with quality
Active involvement in the creation and execution of technical strategies and roadmaps

LinkedIn is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The pay range for this role is $147,000 - $240,000. Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
