Manager, Software Engineering (Identity Decisioning)

We are seeking a Manager, Software Engineer to lead the Identity Decisioning team, responsible for building backend systems that validate consumer identity across all Affirm products, complying with regulatory protocols like KYC. The team collaborates with Product, Compliance, Auth, Fraud, and other engineering teams to deliver transparent financial products that assist consumers in making informed purchasing decisions. As we expand to be a key player in e-commerce and retail, this is an exciting opportunity to join a core part of our mission.

What You’ll Do

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams throughout the product development lifecycle, ensuring technical sustainability, risk management, and understanding of trade-offs.
• Create a long-term technical roadmap to support our rapidly growing business.
• Coach, develop, retain, and support the growth of team members.
• Establish OKRs and critical metrics to guide and measure the engineering team's success.
• Mentor engineers to improve their design, code quality, and testing skills.
• Ensure the availability and performance of your team’s systems.
• Cultivate a strong engineering culture focused on innovation, accountability, empathy, and execution.
• Promote an inclusive environment for people from diverse backgrounds.
• Build relationships across engineering and other departments for project design, implementation, rollout, and maintenance.
• Participate in hiring and talent development efforts.

What We Look For

• Equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• 3+ years managing high-performing engineering teams.
• 7+ years in software development, proficient in backend languages like Python and Kotlin.
• Experience architecting, launching, and maintaining enterprise-scale products.
• Experience with cloud providers such as AWS.
• Knowledge of data frameworks like Spark, Kafka, Kubernetes, and Airflow.
• Proven ability to grow and manage engineering teams.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Experience in fintech or finance is a plus.
• A humble team player committed to peer development.

Pay Grade - P. Equity Grade - 13. Compensation includes base pay, equity, stipends, and benefits, with a transparent pay structure based on experience, skills, and location.

Base pay ranges (annual): $225,000 - $275,000 in CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT; $200,000 - $250,000 in other states.

Affirm is a remote-first company, allowing most roles to be performed remotely within the U.S., with some requiring occasional office visits.
