This remote role requires strong communication, broad technical judgment across web and cloud technologies, and a track record of growing engineering teams in an agile setting.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of software development experience with at least 2 years in engineering leadership.
  • Proven ability to grow engineering teams in an agile environment.
  • Hands-on experience across web stack: frontend (JavaScript/TypeScript, React/Angular) and backend (Java/Node.js).
  • Experience with scalable microservices and cloud-based environments (AWS).

Your impact on the team

We are hiring two Software Engineering Managers to join the engineering organization supporting Connect, McGraw Hill's digital learning platform. Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering, the Manager, Software Engineering for Connect will lead and develop a team of software engineers and responsible for building and evolving high-quality digital products and services. You will drive delivery, team health, and technical excellence while partnering cross-functionally to align with product goals.

This role requires a highly technical leader with strong software engineering experience and exceptional communication and relationship-building skills in a SOX- and SOC 2-compliant environment where engineering, security, and operational rigor matter.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What You'll Do:
  • Lead, coach, and develop software engineering teams while fostering collaboration, learning, and continuous improvement.

  • Manage Vendor teams and partnerships to support effective delivery, accountability, and alignment with engineering goals.

  • Own team commitments and deliver high-quality work on time across products, services, and technical initiatives.

  • Translate product and design requirements into scalable, maintainable technical solutions.

  • Communicate decisions, trade-offs, status, and risks clearly to stakeholders at all levels, building trust across product, design, engineering, and other partners.

  • Apply broad technical judgment across web applications, microservices, databases, AWS, and CI/CD to guide architecture and technical decisions without micromanaging.

  • Partner with engineering teams and stakeholders to integrate systems effectively, including third-party platforms and shared services.

  • Ensure the team's work meets SOX and SOC 2 requirements by embedding controls, auditability, and change-management discipline into daily engineering practices.

  • Promote engineering excellence in code quality, testing, performance, delivery, and reliability.

  • Drive modern development practices, including automation, observability, and continuous delivery.

  • Stay current on software development and technology trends to inform strategic decisions and team direction.

What You Bring:
  • Strong foundation in computer science or a related field, with 5+ years of software development experience and at least 2 years in an engineering leadership role. Passion for using technology to solve meaningful problems and improve user outcomes.
  • Proven ability to lead and grow engineering teams in a collaborative, agile environment.
  • Broad, hands‑on technical experience across the web stack, including frontend (JavaScript/TypeScript, React or Angular), backend (Java, Node.js), relational and non relational databases, and AWS cloud services.
  • Experience building and operating scalable microservices architectures and distributed systems used at scale.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, observability platforms, and production operations in a cloud-based environment.
  • Experience operating in a SOX- and/or SOC 2-compliant environment.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, with comfort working across functions and distributed teams (including offshore/contractor partnerships).
  • Commitment to innovation, quality, and user‑centered development.
Preferred Experience & Skills:
  • Experience working in a product-focused technology environment.
  • Experience with integrations, APIs, or third-party platforms.
  • Familiarity with event‑driven architectures or stream processing.
  • Exposure to platform or infrastructure engineering in a multi‑tenant SaaS environment.
  • Experience building accessible, secure, and reliable applications.

The pay range for this position is between $124,300 - $190,000 annually. However, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
