Job Summary
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Manager, Risk Management andCompliance provides comprehensive risk management and compliancesupport across Occidental College. The Director advises andcollaborates with stakeholders on a broad range of matters,including risk management, insurance, data privacy, compliance,employment, and issues unique to higher education. The Manager,Risk Management and Compliance serves as a strategic andcollaborative problem solver, helping the College identify andaddress risks while supporting institutional priorities in acomplex liberal arts environment. Success in this role requiressound judgment, strong project management skills, and the abilityto effectively balance multiple and competing priorities in afast-paced setting.
Job Duties
- 40% - Risk Management - Primarily responsible for theprocurement and administration of the College’s risk managementprogram, including property, general and automobile liability,environmental, cyber, workers’ compensation, professionalliability, sports accident, and other related insurance coverages.Work with the General Counsel and the College’s insurance brokersto administer the multi-line insurance renewal process, evaluateand structure insurance programs, and procure adequate insurancecoverage. Process and administer insurance claims against theCollege. Review and negotiate insurance coverage and requirementsin contracts; coordinate with insurance providers to ensureadequate coverage for institutional activities and events; andprovide certificates of insurance to campus departments andthird-party requestors. Draft, review, and negotiateinsurance-related provisions in contracts, includingindemnification clauses, waivers, and hold-harmless agreements.Collaborate with the General Counsel and other stakeholders toidentify, assess, and mitigate legal and institutional risks,including developing risk-reduction strategies and best practices.Maintain accurate records and documentation related to insurancepolicies, claims, and other insurance matters. Monitor and manageclaims in coordination with the General Counsel, insurers, andoutside counsel. Implement and oversee a robust enterprise riskmanagement (ERM) framework and strategy to systematically identify,assess, manage, monitor, and mitigate institutional risks,including facilitating the College’s risk survey. Create and updateERM procedures, tools, and training programs to support asustainable and evolving risk culture aligned with the College’sstrategic, academic, research, and operational goals. -(Essential)
- 40% - Compliance - Support the College’s PolicyCommittee by, among other responsibilities, drafting, developing,managing, and reviewing College policies and procedures. Assist andadvise College departments and divisions in ensuring compliancewith applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulationsrelated to higher education and research, including labor andemployment laws such as Title VII, Title IX, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, FEHA,CFRA, and NLRA, as well as other relevant state and local laws.Create and deliver training and educational workshops to the campuscommunity on various compliance and risk management topics. Serveon College committees, task forces, and working groups to providerisk management and compliance guidance and support. Develop andimplement effective and efficient contract policies, processes, andtraining programs. - (Essential)
- 20% - Transactional - Draft, review, and negotiate awide range of contracts and agreements, including, but not limitedto, agreements related to the purchase of services, technology andsoftware agreements, licensing agreements, program affiliation andcollaboration agreements, and agreements related to other domesticand international transactions, while ensuring compliance withapplicable laws, institutional policies, and risk managementprinciples. - (Essential)
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, risk management,compliance, legal studies, public administration, or a relatedfield, or an equivalent combination of education and relevantexperience.
- Five years of progressively responsible experience in riskmanagement, compliance, insurance, contract administration, legaloperations, or a related field, preferably within higher education,a nonprofit organization, or a similarly complex institution.
- Experience developing and implementing policies, procedures,training programs, or risk management processes.
- Experience working collaboratively with multiple departmentsand stakeholders in a complex, fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing insurance programs and claims,reviewing and negotiating contracts, supporting regulatorycompliance, and identifying and mitigating organizationalrisks.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel,PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, WebEditing, and social media applications or any combination ofproductivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
- Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough;skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems andhandling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $82,800/yr-$85,000/yr
If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors suchas skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. Inaddition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable payequity laws and considers internal equity among current employeeswhen developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the rangementioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring atthe maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow forfuture and continued salary growth. We also offer a generouscompensation and benefits package.
