Occidental College is seeking a Part-Time Campus Safety Officer to join the Campus Safety Department. Officers perform patrols on campus and surrounding properties, deter crime, and respond to emergencies to ensure student and staff safety.

This role requires alertness, strong communication, and the ability to document incidents accurately. The position is non-exempt, up to 28 hours per week, with no benefit eligibility.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of security experience or equivalent training.
  • Valid California BSIS guard card, first aid and CPR certification.
  • Valid California driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Ability to communicate professionally in person, by phone or electronically.
  • Ability to work day or night shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high visibility vehicle and foot patrols on campus and adjacent areas to deter crime.
  • Respond to requests for assistance and emergency calls, alarms and incidents.
  • Prepare incident reports and daily shift logs; correct deficiencies as needed.
  • Provide safety escorts and access to college buildings for authorized persons.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, Campus Safety, Campus Safety officersare the main workforce of the Occidental Campus Safety Departmentand are responsible for performing a wide variety of campus safetyfunctions. Performs high visibility vehicle and foot patrols oncampus, at adjacent rental homes, and at sorority/ fraternityhouses to discourage and apprehend lawbreakers, and to detercrime.

Job Duties
  • 35% - Perform high visibility vehicle and foot patrols oncampus, at adjacent rental homes, and at sorority/ fraternityhouses to discourage and apprehend lawbreakers, and to deter crime.Parking and vehicle permit enforcement. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Respond to requests for assistance. Respond to emergencycalls, fire alarms, intrusion alarms on campus and at rental homes.- (Essential)
  • 25% - Prepare incident reports for supervisory review. Writework requests to correct deficiencies. Prepare a daily log of shiftactivities and write incident reports. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Provide safety escorts on and off campus. Provide accessto college buildings and facilities to authorized persons. Providea presence at college sponsored events on and off campus -(Essential)
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of educationand experience.
  • One year of security experience and/or equivalent combinationof training and experience.
  • Valid California BSIS guard card, first aid, and CPRcertification.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license (with a cleandriving record) and be able to be qualified as an OccidentalCollege designated driver (subject to the specific requirementsapproved by the College’s insurance carrier).
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a helpful, courteous,effective and professional manner verbally, in writing orelectronically, or in person, by telephone, two-way radio, andelectronic media.
  • Must be able to work any shift, day/night.
  • Stay abreast of pending changes to best practices in campussafety and community-oriented policing strategies. Participate incrime analysis and prepare crime data as applicable.
  • A comprehensive background/criminal history/Megan’s Law checkwill be completed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel,PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms or any combination ofproductivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough;skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems andhandling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability tocollaborate with a variety of constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Successful completion of the Peace Officers Standards &Training (POST) 832 P.C. and/or 832.2 P.C. Course(s), SB390 course,AB1626 course, police academy training.
  • Experience working safety/security on a college or universitycampus.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $21.00/hr. Please note that this position isnot eligible for benefits.
