Job summary

Interstate Waste Services in the greater New York area is seeking a Manager of Transfer Station to lead safe, compliant, and efficient operations. You will direct site personnel, monitor performance, manage budgets, and drive continuous improvement.

The role requires an associate degree, 3–5 years of operations experience, 3+ years of leadership, and experience in a union environment. OSHA knowledge and strong data-driven decision making are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee daily transfer station operations to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant performance.
  • Lead, coach, develop, and manage site personnel, including scale operators, equipment operators and labor employees.
  • Monitor operational performance, identify trends and issues, and implement corrective actions to improve productivity, service, and cost efficiency.
  • Oversee loading, unloading, weighing, sorting, and material movement activities to maximize throughput and customer service.
  • Manage facility budgets, labor, equipment utilization, maintenance programs, and operating expenses to achieve financial objectives.
  • Conduct incident investigations, determine root causes, and ensure appropriate corrective actions, retraining, and accountability measures are implemented.
  • Lead site safety initiatives, conduct regular safety meetings and training, and reinforce a safety-first culture throughout the operation.
  • Perform routine facility inspections and ensure timely resolution of operational, safety, and maintenance concerns.
  • Maintain positive relationships with customers, regulatory agencies, municipalities, and other stakeholders to support operational and business objectives.
  • Provide regular reporting and communication to leadership regarding operational performance, safety, compliance, and improvement opportunities.

Essential Job Summary

The Manager of Transfer Station is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the transfer station. This role leads site personnel, drives operational performance, ensures regulatory compliance, manages facility and budgets and promotes a culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Associate's degree required; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience considered.
  • 3-5 years of operations experience, preferably in solid waste, environmental services, or a related industry.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience managing frontline and supervisory employees.
  • Experience in a unionized environment, including employee relations, investigations, and grievance handling.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety programs, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Experience managing operational budgets, workforce planning, and cost controls.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills with a data-driven approach.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and operational management systems.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends as business needs require.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform routine site inspections.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
