Position Summary
The Manager of Communications plays a critical role in bringing Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore’s mission, programs, people, and impact to life through compelling, consistent, and timely communications.

The Manager of Communications serves as a key owner of Protect What Matters, helping safeguard BGCMB’s voice, visual identity, stories, reputation, and the trust placed in the organization. Through thoughtful content and strong execution, this role also supports BGCMB in leading the brand and creating memorable experiences for staff, Club members, families, donors, partners, and the broader community.
Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, the Manager leads the day-to-day development and execution of content across digital, print, fundraising, and internal channels. This role works closely with the Development and People & Programs teams to identify stories, gather information, and translate organizational priorities into clear and engaging communications.
The ideal candidate is a hands‑on communications professional, strong writer, thoughtful storyteller, collaborative partner, and organized project manager. This person understands how stories, audiences, channels, and cadence work together and takes initiative to build the relationships and systems needed to sustain a strong content pipeline.
Key Responsibilities
Content and Campaign Execution
- Manage editorial calendars and content plans that support organizational priorities, fundraising goals, programs, events, and seasonal campaigns.
- Draft, edit, and publish high-quality content, including website copy, email communications, social media posts, newsletters, impact stories, event materials, presentations, one‑pagers, and other collateral.
- Translate program information, impact data, and organizational updates into clear, engaging, and audience‑focused communications.
- Coordinate content needs, deadlines, approvals, and distribution across departments.
- Ensure content is timely, accurate, accessible, and aligned with BGCMB’s brand voice, values, and visual identity.
- Execute communications plans and priorities established in partnership with the Vice President of Communications.
Storytelling and Content Development
- Build and maintain a proactive pipeline of stories representing BGCMB’s Club members, staff, programs, partnerships, and communities.
- Develop strong relationships with Club and program staff to regularly identify stories, milestones, outcomes, and content opportunities.
- Conduct interviews with Club members, families, alumni, staff, volunteers, donors, and partners to develop authentic, human‑centered content.
- Coordinate the collection of photos, videos, quotes, testimonials, and impact information needed to support organizational storytelling.
- Organize stories and supporting assets so they can be used across fundraising, marketing, internal communications, and organizational reporting.
- Coordinate with photographers, videographers, designers, and other creative partners as assigned.
- Follow organizational procedures for permissions, releases, privacy, and the responsible representation of young people and families.
Development and Fundraising Support
- Partner with the Development team to create compelling donor‑facing communications aligned with fundraising and stewardship priorities.
- Develop appeals, stewardship communications, impact updates, donor acknowledgements, event materials, reports, and campaign content.
- Help identify stories and impact information that demonstrate how philanthropic support benefits young people and communities.
- Adapt organizational content for specific donor audiences and funding priorities.
- Coordinate communications deliverables and deadlines for fundraising campaigns, events, proposals, and reports.
- Ensure fundraising communications are consistent with BGCMB’s broader brand, voice, and organizational messaging.
Digital and Channel Management
- Schedule, publish, and monitor content across BGCMB’s digital channels, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, email, and the organization’s website.
- Adapt stories and messages for different platforms and audiences while maintaining a consistent organizational voice.
- Identify practical opportunities to strengthen BGCMB’s digital presence through new formats, platform features, and content approaches.
- Monitor email, website, and social media performance and share insights with the Vice President of Communications to inform future content.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and engaging website content.
Internal Communications and Employee Engagement Support
- Support the Vice President of Communications, Chief of Staff, and People & Programs team in executing internal communications and employee‑engagement initiatives.
- Assist with drafting, editing, formatting, and distributing staff communications and materials.
- Identify and develop employee stories that recognize staff contributions and reinforce BGCMB’s mission, core values, and culture.
- Support communications for staff recognition, onboarding, professional development, and employee‑engagement activities.
Brand and Marketing Support
- Serve as a day‑to‑day steward of BGCMB’s brand voice, visual identity, and communications standards.
- Review materials and help staff apply brand and messaging standards consistently across departments and Club locations.
- Support the production of marketing materials for events, campaigns, programs, partnerships, and community‑engagement initiatives.
- Maintain organized templates, brand assets, and communications resources that support consistent execution.
- Support the rollout of organizational initiatives and campaigns by translating strategy into clear communications deliverables.
- Help bring BGCMB’s brand experience pillars to life through communications that lead the brand, protect what matters, and contribute to unforgettable experiences.
Qualifications
- Strong writing, editing, interviewing, and storytelling skills, with close attention to detail, accuracy, and audience.
- Demonstrated ability to identify stories and translate complex information, program outcomes, and human experiences into engaging content.
- Experience developing content across digital, print, fundraising, and internal channels.
- Strong organizational and project‑management skills, including the ability to coordinate multiple priorities, contributors, approvals, and deadlines.
- Collaborative and relationship‑oriented, with the ability to work effectively with Club staff, Development, People & Programs, and organizational leadership.
- Sound judgment and discretion when handling sensitive organizational, employee, donor, or youth‑related information.
- Understanding of privacy, consent, ethical storytelling, and the responsible representation of young people and communities.
- Comfort working in a dynamic environment and spending time at Club locations and organizational events to gather content firsthand.
- Working knowledge of social media, email marketing, content‑management systems, analytics, and common communications or design platforms.
- Passion for community‑centered storytelling, employee engagement, and youth development.
- Commitment to the mission and values of Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore.
Education And Experience
- Approximately 5‑7 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, development communications, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience producing content across multiple formats and managing an ongoing editorial or communications calendar.
- Experience supporting fundraising communications, internal communications, or employee‑engagement initiatives preferred.
- Experience in a nonprofit, education, youth‑development, or other mission‑driven organization preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
