The manager sets team priorities, oversees routine operating plans and costs, and guides risk assessments, control design and testing, remediation, and readiness efforts. The role requires sound judgment, strong knowledge of business processes and financial reporting, and the ability to turn control requirements into practical solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of internal controls professionals; set clear goals, assign work, review quality and timeliness, provide ongoing feedback, and support performance and career development.
  • Plan and allocate team capacity against monthly and routine operating plans; monitor milestones, workload, and costs, and raise resource or schedule risks with leadership.
  • Apply company policies consistently, address routine team matters, and recommend improvements to procedures and practices within the function.
  • SOX program and control environment
  • Lead and contribute to SOX risk assessments, annual planning and scoping, readiness activities, and the ongoing maturity of the SOX program.
  • Oversee assigned process areas and ensure the team understands related business activities, risks, controls, company policies, and applicable accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Guide process walkthroughs, tests of design, and tests of operating effectiveness; review workpapers and documentation for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
  • Partner with process owners to evaluate existing processes, identify control gaps and improvement opportunities, and design practical controls that address risk and exposure.
  • Assess new projects, systems, and process changes for SOX impact; coordinate with cross-functional partners to define and complete readiness actions.
  • Maintain accurate SOX documentation, including process narratives, flowcharts, risk-control matrices, and evidence of control performance.
  • Issues, remediation, and partnership
  • Evaluate audit findings and control deficiencies; analyze relevant facts, assess potential impact, and develop and track remediation plans with SOX leadership and accountable stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors and support requests related to SOX, internal controls, and financial reporting.
  • Explain control requirements, findings, and recommendations to process owners, peer groups, and leaders; build cooperation and influence timely action across functions.
  • Monitor progress against commitments, resolve routine execution issues, and elevate significant risks, delays, or resource needs.
  • Governance and continuous improvement
  • Stay current on relevant SOX, PCAOB, COSO, U.S. GAAP, and public-company reporting requirements and emerging practices.
  • Recommend updates to team procedures and control practices based on changes in the business, systems, risks, and applicable requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of related experience in accounting, external or internal audit, SOX, or internal controls, preferably across public accounting and corporate environments.
  • Experience directly managing or formally leading employees, including assigning work, coaching, providing feedback, and supporting performance and development.
  • Working knowledge of SOX 404, internal control frameworks such as COSO, audit requirements including PCAOB standards, and U.S. GAAP.
  • Experience assessing business process risks, designing or evaluating controls, leading walkthroughs and control testing, documenting results, and driving remediation.
  • Ability to analyze complex or incomplete information, exercise sound judgment, and interpret requirements to recommend appropriate procedures and actions.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain technical control matters and gain cooperation from cross-functional partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize team work, manage multiple timelines, and deliver against recurring plans.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA, CIA, or other relevant professional certification.
  • Experience supporting a public company's SOX program through growth, system implementation, acquisition, or process transformation.
