English Gardens is seeking experienced, energetic department managers for our retail garden center operations. If you have garden center or nursery experience, we’d love to talk to you about leading a team and helping customers select the best plants and products.

The role focuses on customer service, sales growth, and staff development, with training and advancement opportunities within a supportive, team-driven environment. Evening and weekend work may be required, and safety is emphasized.

Qualifications

• In-depth plant knowledge including health, pests, and care of landscape plants.
• Retail or garden center experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide courteous customer service and assist sales with product selection and usage guidance.
• Suggest plant options and care recommendations to customers to boost sales.
• Keep the department display clean, labeled, and well-stocked with quality merchandise.
• Receive, price, and neatly display merchandise; maintain accurate paperwork.
• Assist with inventory and merchandising according to the monthly plan.
• Support Department Manager and General Manager with special projects and training.

Job Summary

The primary responsibility of this entry level position is to provide customer service and sales assistance in the selection/usage/care of all English Gardens products/merchandise while learning the essential functions of the Department Sales Manager position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide customers with courteous assistance and increase sales through suggestive selling and tie-in sales.
• Offer suggestions on plant selection, care and maintenance to all customers.
• Ensure the sales area is clean and attractive with only quality merchandise on display, with proper tags and signage.
• Receive merchandise, price merchandise, and neatly display items within the department.
• Complete all paperwork required in a precise and timely manner.
• Unload merchandise from trucks as required.
• Assist in inventory as directed.
• Follow the monthly planner for product displays and merchandising.
• Act in accordance with the Company code of Conduct at all times.
• Assist with other special duties and projects as directed by the Department Manager or General Manager.
• Participate in ongoing education, including seminars, on-site and off-site training, and Management Success Training Program.

Essential Skills and Knowledge

• In-depth knowledge of plant material, including health, quality issues, disease, and pests of landscape plants, as well as their care and maintenance
• Previous retail experience; Nursery or Garden Center experience a plus
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Organized, detail oriented
• Positive, can-do attitude
• Ability to multi-task and handle overlapping priorities on a daily basis

Other Requirements

• Must be able to work evenings and weekends
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds
• Must be able to work outside and in all elements of Michigan weather
• Must be able to stand and walk up to 8 hours per day
• Must pass a criminal background check
