Job summary

Briggs & Stratton, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the Power group focused on engine testing and development. The role emphasizes planning, organizing, and coordinating activities of an engineering team, driving new manufacturing technologies, and cost reduction programs.

You will supervise product research, testing, design, development, interfacing with customers, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field is required.
  • Seven years of engineering experience are required.
  • Prior management or supervisory experience of a unionized workforce is required.
  • Knowledge of engineering, testing and manufacturing processes related to product and/or manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to solve problems with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong interpersonal, written communication and problem solving skills.
  • Well-developed leadership and planning skills and ability to manage multiple projects.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting and guiding product engineering teams in ongoing development within their assigned area.
  • Supervising and coordinating product research, testing, design and development if applicable.
  • Promoting the New Product Development process and ensuring consistent use.
  • Interfacing with customers regarding part and product design, manufacturing and quality control issues.
  • Maintaining knowledge of regulatory requirements.
  • Reporting on project status, budgets, and customer satisfaction data.
  • Developing and initiating new technologies, process improvements and cost reductions.
  • Proposing business solutions related to product safety initiatives and long-term planning.
  • Performing full managerial responsibilities of a unionized team (hiring, coaching, budgeting).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

As an Engineering Manager within our Power group, your goal will be to manage, plan, organize and coordinate the activities of an engineering group whose focus is on engine testing. You will foster the development of new manufacturing technologies, process / continuous improvement initiatives, new product ideas/concepts/designs, test & validation and cost reduction programs for new and existing engine/product programs.

You will do this by:
  • Supporting and guiding product engineering teams in ongoing development within their assigned area
  • Supervising and coordinating product research, testing, design and development if applicable
  • Promoting the New Product Development process and ensures consistent use
  • Interfacing with customers regarding part and product design, manufacturing and quality control issues, which fosters relationships
  • Maintaining knowledge of regulatory requirements
  • Reporting regularly on project status, ensures budgets are on track, manages customer satisfaction data and other staff activities
  • Developing and initiating new technologies, process improvement initiatives and cost reduction programs
  • Proposing business solutions related to product safety initiatives, annual strategic/situational planning, long-term planning and supplier relationship agreements
  • Performing full range of managerial responsibilities of a unionized team, which may include but not be limited to: interviewing, hiring, coaching and developing employees; planning, assigning and directing work; EEO/AA, performance management, department budget
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Fundamental knowledge of statistics and reliability concepts
  • Strong team building skills
  • Ability to develop and coordinate activities of others and to focus on major project resources to ensure assignments are completed accurately, on time, and on budget
  • Fluent in English and primary language used in area of responsibility and/or location
