What You Can Expect:

This position will lead a team of 7 Claims adjusters (level 3 associates), focused on Standard CL and Litigation. This leader will provide support and training on best practices for associates to ensure they are providing best-in-class customer service to Nationwide members.

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Strong people leadership experience highly preferred
  • Commercial Casualty claims experience preferred
  • ESS knowledge/experience is a plus

Job Description Summary

Do you have a strong desire to resolve complicated insurance claims by providing prompt, courteous, and fair service to customers? Are you a skilled investigator, negotiator, and communicator? If you thrive in an environment where you can problem-solve claims resolution, while following processes that provide fair resolution, customer satisfaction, and cost management, then we want to hear from you!

As a Claims Manager, we’ll count on you to promote and provide exemplary customer service. You’ll manage the analysis, review, and adjustment of commercial casualty claims requiring investigation, liability evaluation, and negotiation. You’ll also manage the activities of defense counsel to expedite settlement and to control average loss cost and litigation expenses. You’ll be responsible for the disposition of claims according to your prescribed authority. You’ll have opportunities to provide advice and counsel to claims personnel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage commercial casualty claims from inception to conclusion, including settlement of all claims and lawsuits within your area of responsibility.
  • Plan and execute schedules to apply best claims practices and conclude cases per company guidelines, maintaining high standards of professional conduct.
  • Manage reserve processes, approve special reserves as necessary.
  • Conduct on-site investigations of reported commercial claims.
  • Stay current on all insurance lines, court decisions, guidelines, policy changes, and modifications, attending seminars and training as needed.
  • Demonstrate technical excellence, manage productivity, conduct reviews, and develop claims staff through coaching, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Oversee defense counsel handling lawsuits, including approving defense attorney fees.
  • Provide training and counsel to Claims Representatives and other departments as requested.
  • Deliver positive customer service to all stakeholders.
  • Identify and develop high-potential associates for critical roles.
  • Manage team performance, including hiring, training, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions.
Typical Skills and Experiences:

Requires a bachelor’s degree or higher, state licensing where applicable, and at least eight years of commercial claims handling experience, with supervisory experience preferred. Must possess deep knowledge of claims practices, insurance contracts, legal procedures, and excellent communication and organizational skills.

Additional Information:

Role reports to a Claims Director and leads Claims Specialists. The position is based in any of the lower 48 U.S. states. The salary range is $95,000-$197,000, with a typical starting range of $106,000-$158,000, depending on experience and location. Benefits include health insurance, paid time off, 401(k), pension plan, and more.
