Job summary

ArcBest is seeking a Manager, Application Standards to lead architecture guidance, development standards, and modernization efforts across the organization. You will drive training, tooling support, and enablement initiatives for developers, while coordinating with cross-functional teams to reduce friction and align with enterprise technology strategy.

The role includes team leadership, performance evaluations, salary reviews, and capacity planning to sustain an effective architecture program

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, maintenance, and adoption of software development standards, patterns, practices, and supporting documentation across ArcBest.
  • Lead and coordinate the team of architects responsible for providing architecture guidance and consultation to development teams, ensuring alignment with enterprise strategy, security, and quality.
  • Coordinate modernization efforts by tracking priorities, risks, dependencies, and progress while guiding teams on modernization paths.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver technical training, learning materials, enablement sessions, and knowledge-sharing opportunities for developers and related technology teams.
  • Support the rollout and adoption of developer tools, AI-assisted development capabilities, platform engineering practices, and other emerging technologies.

Job description

The Manager, Application Standards leads a team that provides software architecture guidance, development standards, technical training, modernization strategy, developer tooling support, and emerging technology research. This position partners with leaders, architects, developers, quality assurance, security, technical operations, and other stakeholders to promote consistent development practices, reduce developer friction, and prepare teams for future technologies. The Manager, Application Standards also maintains standards and documentation, coordinates company-wide modernization efforts, oversees architectural support assignments, and helps ensure applications and development practices align with enterprise technology strategy, security expectations, and quality principles.

The Manager, Application Standards plans, prioritizes, and delivers work related to standards, training, documentation, modernization, platform engineering, centers of excellence, AI developer tooling, and developer support. This position establishes backlog and sprint planning practices, coordinates monthly leadership updates and status reporting, tracks modernization priorities and risks, and supports the rollout and adoption of tools, processes, and learning programs that improve software delivery across ArcBest. The Manager, Application Standards supports internal development teams by providing reliable support channels, clear guidance, practical training, and actionable standards throughout the software development life cycle. This position also includes team leadership, performance evaluations, career development, personnel assessments, salary reviews, stakeholder communication, and management of team capacity for strategic, organization-wide enablement work.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development, maintenance, and adoption of software development standards, patterns, practices, and supporting documentation across ArcBest.
  • Lead and coordinate the team of architects responsible for providing architecture guidance and consultation to development teams, helping ensure recommended solutions align with enterprise strategy, security expectations, quality principles, and long-term maintainability.
  • Coordinate modernization efforts by tracking application priorities, risks, dependencies, and progress while helping teams identify appropriate modernization paths.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver technical training, learning materials, enablement sessions, and knowledge-sharing opportunities for developers and related technology teams.
  • Support the evaluation, rollout, and adoption of developer tools, AI-assisted development capabilities, platform engineering practices, and other emerging technologies.
  • Manage developer support channels and service requests to ensure teams receive clear guidance, timely assistance, and consistent answers related to standards, tooling, and development practices.
  • Establish and maintain team work intake, backlog prioritization, sprint planning, status reporting, and leadership update practices for standards, training, modernization, and enablement initiatives.
  • Partner with leaders, architects, developers, quality assurance, security, technical operations, and other stakeholders to align standards and enablement work with organizational needs.
  • Lead, coach, and develop assigned employees by planning work, delegating responsibilities, providing feedback, evaluating performance, supporting career development, and managing team capacity.
  • Participate in recruiting, onboarding, personnel assessments, salary reviews, and other management activities needed to build and sustain an effective team.
  • Conduct research, assess industry trends, and recommend improvements that strengthen software delivery practices, technical capability, and developer productivity.
  • Other duties and projects, as needed.
Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field, preferred.
  • Experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.

Experience:

  • 10+ years of software development experience, preferred.

Computer Skills:

  • A solid understanding of object-oriented programming with significant hands on experience. Preferred
  • Prior training and/or experience in any of the following: Vue.js, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, ASP.NET, .NET, C#, VB.NET, SQL, DB2, Object Oriented Programming, Active Server Pages, COM objects, OLAP – ESSBASE, Client Server VBA, Visual Basic, VB Script, COBOL, MVS, CICS, ZEKE/ZEB Technologies, TSOIISPF/SDSF, JCL application design, Assembler.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Other Details

Work Hours:

  • Work hours are flexible Monday – Friday with hours between 6:00 am – 6:00 pm. Occasional irregular hours may be required depending on projects and workload.

Compensation:

  • This is a salary position paid biweekly.
