Job summary

bmc is seeking a Manager of Anatomic Pathology Operations & Specimen Management to lead daily lab operations, gross room, specimen receiving, and archive management. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field.
  • Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • PA-ASCP, HTL-ASCP, MLS/MT-ASCP or CLIA oversight qualifications as applicable.
  • Minimum five years in Anatomic Pathology with at least two years in leadership or supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Direct recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, competency assessment, coaching, and performance management for assigned staff.
  • Lead quality, safety, and regulatory compliance programs (CAP/CLIA/JCI/OSHA/HIPAA).
  • Oversee Gross Room operations, specimen management, accessioning, and workflow improvements.
  • Manage specimen receiving, triage, frozen section coordination, chain-of-custody, and archive activities.
  • Serve as liaison between Anatomic Pathology and clinical departments; advise on specimen collection and workflow optimization.
  • Oversee slide and tissue archive operations, retention schedules, and access to materials.
  • Collaborate with informatics and pathology leadership to optimize Epic Beaker workflows and system readiness.
  • Administer budgets, capital planning, supplies, and productivity metrics to meet departmental goals.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Position: Manager Anatomic Pathology

Department: Lab - Pathology

Schedule: 40 hours

The Manager, Anatomic Pathology Operations & Specimen Management provides operational leadership and oversight for Anatomic Pathology services, including gross room operations, specimen receiving and management, accessioning support, frozen section coordination, and slide and paraffin block archive management.

The position directs daily laboratory operations, workforce management, quality and regulatory programs, operational improvement initiatives, laboratory information system optimization, and financial performance.

The role serves as a key operational liaison between Anatomic Pathology and clinical departments, collaborating with pathologists, laboratory leadership, and operational partners to ensure safe, efficient, compliant, and high-quality laboratory services while managing staff and supporting departmental strategic objectives. Works under general direction while exercising direct supervisory and managerial authority over assigned Anatomic Pathology operational roles

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
  • Directs recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, competency assessment, coaching, performance management, employee engagement, and professional development activities for assigned staff to support operational effectiveness and workforce performance.
  • Leads quality, safety, and regulatory compliance programs, including inspection readiness, corrective action planning, policy development, quality indicator monitoring, and adherence to CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, OSHA, HIPAA, and organizational standards.
  • Leads daily operations of the Gross Room, specimen management, accessioning support, and pre-analytic Anatomic Pathology workflows; establishes operational goals, monitors performance indicators, and implements process improvements to enhance efficiency and service delivery.
  • Oversees specimen receiving, specimen triage, frozen section coordination, chain-of-custody processes, gross examination activities when qualified, and specimen workflow from receipt through final disposition while ensuring compliance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Serves as the primary operational liaison between Anatomic Pathology and surgical, procedural, ambulatory, physician practice, nursing, and other clinical departments; provides consultation regarding specimen collection, transport requirements, workflow optimization, and service recovery.
  • Directs slide, paraffin block, and retained tissue archive operations, including retrieval requests, consultation support, loan tracking, retention schedules, destruction processes, archive systems oversight, and vendor coordination to ensure timely access to materials.
  • Partners with laboratory informatics, pathologists, and operational leaders to optimize Epic Beaker Anatomic Pathology workflows, specimen tracking, reporting processes, testing activities, system upgrades, and implementation readiness efforts.
  • Manages operational budgets, capital planning, supply utilization, equipment resources, productivity initiatives, and performance metrics; identifies opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support departmental strategic goals.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biology, Laboratory Management, Healthcare Administration
  • Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Laboratory Management, or a related field.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Pathologists' Assistant (PA-ASCP)
  • Histotechnologist (HTL-ASCP)
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS/MT-ASCP)
  • Other qualifications meeting CLIA requirements for oversight of high-complexity laboratory testing
EXPERIENCE
  • Experience leading laboratory construction projects, workflow redesign initiatives, laboratory information system implementations, CAP inspections, and regulatory surveys.
  • Experience in an Academic Medical Center. Experience with Epic Beaker Anatomic Pathology.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in Anatomic Pathology, including at least two (2) years of supervisory, management, or equivalent leadership experience with responsibility for laboratory operations, quality management, and regulatory compliance.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS :
  • Knowledge of Anatomic Pathology operations, including gross room workflows, specimen management, frozen section processes, and archive operations.
  • Knowledge of CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, OSHA, HIPAA, and related laboratory regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to develop, monitor, and evaluate operational and quality performance metrics.
  • Proficiency in Epic Beaker Anatomic Pathology or comparable laboratory information systems.
  • Ability to conduct staffing, scheduling, competency assessment, and performance management activities.
  • Ability to manage operational budgets, productivity measures, and resource utilization.
