Responsibilities
- Determine appropriate mammographic technique and positioning of the patient. Promote a positive and professional team effort to increase customer satisfaction.
- Position patient and adjust equipment, secure, and immobilize support devices as needed to perform procedures.
- Determine appropriate radiographic technique based on anatomy and patient’s condition to obtain quality films for radiologists.
- Secure history from patient regarding reason for tests and record on appropriate form for review.
- Participate in efforts to reduce wait times, report turnaround times, and minimize lost films.
- Coordinate with registration to expedite patient flow.
- Adjust mammogram schedules to include late and add-on patients as needed.
- Answer phones, schedule patients, respond to questions, and page physicians as necessary.
- File reports, hang, and take down films as required.
- Call patients back for additional views, answer questions, and schedule promptly and appropriately.
- Adhere to safety standards to ensure patient safety and quality care.
- Maintain supplies and cleanliness in the assigned room daily.
- Ensure accuracy of exams and requisitions.
- Perform clerical duties such as maintaining patient records, scheduling, and providing instructions.
- Coordinate quality control tasks like checking film quality and labeling.
- Operate and maintain mammographic equipment, including advanced devices like Mammotome and stereotactic systems.
- Assist radiologists with specialty procedures including ductograms and biopsies.
- Train and orient new technologists and students.
Requirements
- Graduate from an accredited AMA School of Radiology.
- 1-2 years experience as a General Radiographer or Sonographer.
- Specialized training in mammography (40 hours) and ongoing education.
- Knowledge of breast anatomy.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of HIS and RIS systems.
- Effective interpersonal skills and customer interaction.
- ARRT registration, CPR certification, and state accreditation.
Physical and Working Conditions
- Ability to make independent decisions and work with minimal assistance.
- High technical skills, conscientiousness, and ability to work rotating shifts.
- Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance; use patient handling equipment for heavier lifts.
- Work in a fast-paced environment, potentially exposed to hazardous materials and diseases.
