Job summary

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University seeks a Reverse Engineer Researcher in the Threat Analysis directorate. You will reverse engineer malicious code, prototype new analysis methods, and document findings for high-impact customers, while exploring AI-assisted techniques and contributing to the broader security community.

You will work with peers in a federally funded setting, travel moderately, and maintain confidentiality while advancing malware analysis

Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or related discipline with three years of experience, or MS with one year of experience.
  • Strong interest in malware analysis and reverse engineering problems.
  • Analytical mindset and curiosity about how software works.
  • Ability to balance rapid prototyping with maintainable tool development.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15% and handle sensitive information.

Responsibilities

  • Reverse engineer malicious code for high-impact customers and develop new analysis methods.
  • Perform in-depth reverse engineering and document results in reports and presentations.
  • Explore AI to support reverse engineering and apply it to AI systems.
  • Prototype and transition new analysis methods and tools.
  • Identify emerging and complex security threats and document them.
  • Collaborate with the security community through papers and presentations.
