Job summary

The Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University invites applications for a senior reverse engineering specialist in Arlington, VA, to reverse engineer malware, develop new analysis methods, and contribute to AI-enabled security tools.

You will document findings, present results, and mentor others while traveling to sponsor sites and conferences as needed. Strong C/C++, static analysis, and debugging skills are essential.

Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or related discipline with eight years experience; OR MS with five years; OR PhD with two years.
  • Experience in malware analysis and reverse engineering.
  • Analytical mindset with curiosity about how software works.
  • Ability to balance rapid prototyping with maintainable tool development.
  • Strong technical writing experience.
  • Ability to handle confidential information and shifting priorities.
  • Willingness to travel up to 15%.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Reverse engineer malicious code and develop analysis tools.
  • Document results in reports, presentations, and exchanges.
  • Explore AI support for reverse engineering and apply to AI systems.
  • Design, prototype, and transition new analysis methods and tools.
  • Identify and document emerging active security threats.
  • Collaborate with the broader security community.
