Job summary

The City of Friendswood, Department of Public Works is seeking a Maintenance Worker to assist in repairs of city streets, rights-of-way, and drainage systems. This role supports outdoor maintenance and uses a variety of equipment.

Responsibilities include operating backhoe and tractors, repairing curbs and sidewalks, storm sewers, and performing labor tasks in all weather. The position requires heavy lifting and 24/7 readiness during emergencies, with EOE/ADA compliance.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Six months to one year of relevant experience.
• Valid Texas Driver's license.

• Maintains and repairs streets, curbs, and sidewalks using a variety of tools and equipment.
• Installs and repairs storm sewers, inlets, and storm manholes.
• Operates laser-leveling equipment to determine ditch elevations for grading and maintenance.
• Operates heavy mowing equipment during maintenance of ditches, shoulders, guardrails, and easements.
• Operates water jet truck to clean culverts and storm sewers.
• Provides emergency response to remove fallen trees, storm debris, assist in emergency repairs, and respond to traffic emergencies after hours.
• Complies with and enforces safety precautions to prevent injury or accidents on job sites.
• Performs other duties within the areas of responsibility and ability as assigned

DUTIES:

• Periodically operates backhoe and other tractors and drives crew trucks.
• Maintains and repairs streets, curbs, and sidewalks, using a variety of tools and equipment.
• Installs and repairs storm sewers, inlets, and storm manholes.
• Operates laser-leveling equipment to determine ditch elevations for grading and maintenance.
• Operates heavy mowing equipment during maintenance of ditches, shoulders, guardrails, and easements.
• Operates water jet truck to clean culverts and storm sewers.
• Provides emergency response to remove fallen trees, storm debris, assist in emergency repairs, and respond to traffic emergencies, after normal business hours.
• Complies with and enforces normal safety precautions to prevent injury or accidents to self or others on the job sites.
• Performs other duties within the areas of responsibility and ability as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or G.E.D, six months to one year of experience, valid Texas Driver's license. Experience working for City, County, or State preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position requires heavy lifting (e.g., greater than 50 pounds) and extended
period of sitting, walking, and standing. Position incumbent is constantly exposed to dirt, dust, noise, heat,
cold and dampness and occasionally exposed to odors, fumes, and bad lighting. Job may require above average
agility and dexterity. Job may also require physical exertion for long periods of time. Most of
workday is spent outside, and incumbent is exposed to all types of weather conditions. Use of heavy equipment, power drills and saws, trimmers, and hand tools and various other tools.

Position is considered Emergency Essential and will require 24-hour availability during emergency conditions.
