Job description

Department and Position Summary:

The Department of Public Works provides quality development and maintenance of streets, sanitation, and parks for the City of Sheboygan and its residents. The Department of Public Works (DPW) facilitates safe and efficient delivery of essential goods and services, provides clean and beautiful public spaces that maximize the natural environment, and enhances the overall quality of life of residents. DPW strives to deliver professional, quality public service with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Maintenance Worker – Streets is an entry-level position designed to expose and develop skills. Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled, skilled, and specialized labor including complex physical and mechanical tasks. Responsible for operating and maintaining trucks, equipment, and facilities (including parks) necessary for the department's operations. Employees must be available for emergency work 24/7 (e.g., snow and storm activity). Job duties must be performed with respect, integrity, and objectivity, in the best interest of the City, with a high level of confidentiality. All City employees are expected to be honest and truthful at all times.

  1. Performs semi-skilled and unskilled labor duties in constructing, repairing, and maintaining infrastructure and other activities under the Department of Public Works.
  2. Operates equipment such as tractors, street sweepers, front-end loaders, sewer jet & TV trucks, rollers, concrete saws, chippers, pumps, boilers, heating and ventilating systems, and drives all CDL-level trucks as needed.
  3. Collects garbage, refuse, and trash, and operates collection equipment.
  4. Operates snow and ice removal equipment, including plow trucks and wings, and hauls materials such as sand, gravel, dirt, snow, salt, and yard waste.
  5. Participates in inspecting and maintaining storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins, manholes, culverts, and other drainage-related areas.
  6. Performs landscaping, grounds maintenance, and setup at parks, cemeteries, and other public areas.
  7. Cleans and maintains public grounds and equipment.
  8. Assists in tree planting, trimming, removal, and park activities.
  9. Maintains accurate records and reports regarding assigned duties.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin CDL with endorsements “ABCD” in good standing or ability to obtain within three months of hire. Failure to obtain or maintain will result in termination. (Class A may be required based on departmental needs.)
  • Knowledge of proper use of materials, equipment, and tools for ground maintenance, repair, and construction activities.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work and understand occupational hazards and safety practices.
  • Availability for emergency operations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.

Job offers are contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Work Environment:

Requires above-average physical strength and stamina. Employees are regularly required to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift, and handle materials weighing 50-75 pounds for extended periods. Tasks involve repetitive motions with hands, legs, and back. Work is often outdoors in all weather conditions. Appropriate PPE is required. May require evening and long hours and response to call-ins outside normal hours.
