Summary of Job

The Department of Public Works provides quality development and maintenance of streets, sanitation, and parks for the City of Sheboygan and its residents. The Department of Public Works (DPW) facilitates safe and efficient delivery of essential goods and services, provides clean and beautiful public spaces that maximize the natural environment, and enhances the overall quality of life of residents. DPW strives to deliver professional, quality public service with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Maintenance Worker – Streets is an entry level position for DPW to expose and develop skills. Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled, skilled, and specialized labor including complex physical and mechanical tasks. Responsible for the operation and routine maintenance of trucks, equipment, and facilities (including parks) deemed necessary by the supervisor for the successful operation of the department. Employees must be available for emergency work 24/7 (i.e., for snow and/or storm activity). It is imperative that job duties are performed with respect, integrity, objectivity, and in the best interest of the City. This position requires a high level of confidentiality. All City employees are expected to be honest and truthful at all times.

Responsibilities
  • Performs semi-skilled and unskilled labor duties in the construction, repair, and maintenance of infrastructure and various activities under the authority of the Department of Public Works.
  • Operates related equipment such as tractors, street sweepers, front-end loaders, sewer jet & TV trucks, rollers, concrete saws, chippers, pumps, boilers, heating and ventilating systems, and drives all CDL level trucks to perform necessary tasks.
  • Collects garbage, refuse, and trash and operates collection equipment.
  • Performs safe and effective operation of plow trucks, wings, and related snow and ice removal equipment; hauls sand, gravel, dirt, snow, salt, garbage, yard waste, materials, and equipment deemed necessary.
  • Participates in the inspection and maintenance of storm and sanitary sewers, catch basins, manholes, culverts, and other drainage-related areas and projects.
  • Performs landscaping, grounds maintenance, and setup at parks, cemeteries, and other public places.
  • Cleans and maintains public area grounds and equipment.
  • Assists in tree planting, trimming, removal, and park activities.
  • Keeps accurate records and makes reports regarding duties as assigned.

Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements “ABCD” in good standing or the ability to obtain within three months of hire. Failure to obtain or maintain will result in termination of employment. (May be required to obtain a Class A based on Departmental needs)
Qualifications & Skills
  • Knowledge of proper uses and techniques for materials, equipment, and tools for ground maintenance, repair, and construction activities.
  • Ability to perform hard, physical labor with knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
  • Availability for emergency operations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.

Job offers are contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Work Environment

Requires above-average physical strength and stamina. Tasks involve standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting (50-75 pounds), and handling materials. Frequent outdoor work in all weather conditions with PPE required. Occasionally work evenings, long hours, and respond to call-ins.
