Job summary

The City of Red Oak is seeking a Streets Maintenance Worker to perform semi-skilled street repair and maintenance tasks under supervision. You will safely operate tools and municipal equipment to build, repair, and maintain streets infrastructure.

Responsibilities include repairing pavement, maintaining storm drainage, erecting traffic signs, cleaning rights-of-way, and supporting drainage projects. High school diploma or GED and valid Texas CDL/NIMS are required or obtainable within stated

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • On-the-job training will be provided.
  • Ability to safely operate tools and equipment listed above.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License with clear driving record.
  • NIMS Training obtained within 3 months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Class B CDL within 6 months, and CDL within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Represents the City of Red Oak in a professional, appropriate manner at all times.
  • Repairing concrete and/or asphalt pavement.
  • Maintenance and repair of storm-drain inlets and flumes.
  • Inspect, maintain, clean, and repair stormwater pipes and drainage ditches.
  • Trash & debris clean-up on streets and right-of-ways.
  • Creation and Installation of Traffic and Street Signs.
  • Barricade maintenance.
  • Tree trimming.
  • Ice & flood control.
  • Excavating by use of hand tools.
  • Weed eating; and
  • Mowing.
  • Builds forms, pours, and finishes concrete projects.
  • Operates equipment such as jackhammers, spray paint guns, rollers, front-end loaders, tamper, chainsaws, weed eaters & mowers, and trucks.
  • Painting or installing buttons, crosswalks, and other traffic markings.
  • Installation of traffic and street signs.
  • Assists in drainage projects.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the public through courteous interactions.
  • Follows safety rules and works according to procedures.

Summary

The Streets Maintenance Worker performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks as a member of a street maintenance and repair crew, under the general direction of the Public Works Streets and Drainage Supervisor. This individual safely performs manual labor tasks and operates tools and equipment to build, repair and maintain municipal streets infrastructure.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Represents the City of Red Oak in a professional, appropriate manner at all times.

Performs Various Tasks Such As
  • Repairing concrete and/or asphalt pavement;
  • Maintenance and repair of storm-drain inlets and flumes;
  • Inspect, maintain, clean, and repair stormwater pipes and drainage ditches;
  • Trash & debris clean-up on streets and right-of-ways;
  • Creation and Installation of Traffic and Street Signs;
  • Barricade maintenance;
  • Tree trimming ;
  • Ice & flood control;
  • Excavating by use of hand tools;
  • Weed eating; and
  • Mowing.

Operates a variety of Public Works equipment relative to work assignments, including:
  • Jackhammers;

Painting or installing buttons, crosswalks, and other traffic markings.

Performs all job duties, tasks, and activities according to work instructions, defined procedures, and policies.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • High School diploma or GED required;
  • Entry level position, previous experience as a laborer or in construction is preferred but not required. On the job training will be provided; and
  • Ability to safely operate tools and equipment listed above.
Certifications & Licenses
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License with clear driving record;
  • NIMS Training obtained within 3 months of hire; and
  • Ability to obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s permit within 6 months, and Class B Commercial Driver’s License within 1 year of hire
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to attain skills for proper use and care of gas and electric tools, equipment, methods, and materials used in public works streets and drainage utility projects.
  • Ability to attain knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform tasks safely.
  • Basic written and spoken English language skills and the ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Basic math skills including ability to perform accurate measurements.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team player and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to respond appropriately to requests and inquiries.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and effectively handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to abide by all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to safely perform all physical requirements of the job, including strenuous tasks under varying weather conditions.
