Birch Family Services is a leading provider of education, employment, and community support services for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities and their families in New York City. Position Summary

The Maintenance Worker / Painter maintains the building in a clean, orderly, safe condition. Duties include interior and exterior painting projects and may include the repair of fixtures and equipment; the performance of routine maintenance; performing general cleaning and heavy‑duty cleaning duties; notifying management of needs for repairs; and snow & debris removal from walkways, sidewalks and driveways.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Travel up to 60 minutes to different job sites and supply stores within New York City
  • Interior and exterior painting projects utilizing brush/roller and airless paint spraying systems
  • Drywall repair and minor carpentry projects as needed
  • Utilizing ladder and scaffolding when necessary
  • Performs preventive building maintenance duties (i.e., caulks windows & doors, repairs/replaces broken windows, etc.).
  • Ensures that all hazardous conditions are addressed in a timely manner (i.e., snow removal; gathering and removing trash from the premises; debris removal, etc.).
  • Purchases supplies, equipment and materials necessary to complete projects.
  • Assembles and moves furniture, hangs pictures and bulletin boards, moves and sets up tables & chairs, etc.).
  • General and heavy‑duty cleaning tasks as needed including steam cleans & shampoos carpets; strips, seals and polishes floors
  • Move furniture, deliveries, packages and other large items as required.
  • Promptly communicate any facilities or maintenance issues with the building administrator or designee.
  • Perform other duties as required by management team
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Two (2) or more years of painting experience
  • Valid New York State driver’s license
  • Ability to pass background checks in accordance with Office of People with Developmental Disabilities and New York State Justice Center.
Physical Requirements
  • Maintenance assignments involve moderate to heavy physical work. There is a frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.
  • Regularly required to speak clearly and hear the spoken word well.
  • Regularly required to utilize near vision ability to read documents
  • Regularly required to perform physical maintenance tasks, including operating cleaning and repair equipment, tools, and ladders.
  • Ability to apply proper lifting techniques.
