Job summary

City of DeLand is seeking a Maintenance Worker I in Public Works - Trees to perform semi-skilled manual tasks under supervision. Responsibilities include tree pruning, removal, planting, brush chipping, and operating light trucks and equipment, in various weather conditions.

MAINTENANCE WORKER I - Public Works - Trees

Department: 1303/Public Works Trees Exempt: No

Reports To: ForemanPay Wage:$16.75 Hourly

Position Type: Full-Time Hours: 40 hrs/week

Job Summary:

This position performs a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks under direct supervision of a Foreman, Lead Worker, or other higher-level classified employees. Duties may involve the use of hand and power tools and the operation of light truck and construction equipment as a part of the assignment. Duties may be performed under adverse weather or working conditions.

Job Description:
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs manual labor tasks related to tree pruning, removing and planting.
  • Tasks include, but are not limited to, dragging and chipping brush, felling and bucking logs, handling ropes, cleaning and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is preferred.
  • Tree pruning/grounds cleanup experience is desired.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver's license and an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Possessingand maintaining certifications in Maintenance of Traffic(MOT) and Electrical Awareness Program (EHAP) are required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read and write neatly.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to follow and apply common sense understanding, to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to work independently and in a diligent manner.
  • Ability to use various hand and power tools related to the job.
  • Good physical condition is essential.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. The employee may work in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in water and may handle chemicals.
