Job summary

The City of Rocky Mount is seeking a Park Grounds Maintenance worker to perform skilled outdoor maintenance across city parks and facilities. You will mow grass, edge curbs, plant trees, maintain flowers, and support irrigation and turf projects.

The role requires operating mowers and tools, following safety guidelines, and assisting with special events. A NC driver’s license is needed; training will be provided. Outdoor work is a core aspect of this full-time position.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid North Carolina driver license for the type of vehicle operated.
• Must have a valid NC driver’s license.
• No prior experience required.

This position performs skilled work in the maintenance of park grounds and facilities.

The Crew Leader assigns work in terms of general instructions.

• Operates mowers, blowers, edgers, and weed eaters.
• Picks up supplies needed to perform daily work activities.

Minimum Qualifications

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

The Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES:

Guidelines include the Personnel Policy Manual; OSHA regulations; work zone safety standards; and equipment operation and repair manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:

The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:

The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of City parks. Success in this position contributes to a well-maintained City park grounds and facilities.

Physical Demands

Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.

Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.

Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand

Hearing 1: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination sound.
