City of Shelby in Shelby, NC is seeking a general Parks Grounds worker to perform park grounds and building maintenance and repair tasks under the supervision of the Grounds Crew Supervisor.

You will clean buildings, mow fields, operate maintenance equipment, and assist with event setups; requires a high school diploma or GED, valid NC driver license, and ability to perform manual labor in varying weather. CPR certification must be obtained within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Perform park grounds and building maintenance and repair tasks under supervision.
  • Clean buildings and offices; dust, vacuum, mop, and empty trash; maintain floors; clean restrooms; pick up litter.
  • Mow and maintain athletic fields, cemeteries, golf course greens/fairways, and playgrounds; seed and fertilize as needed.
  • Trim hedges and weeds around fences and equipment; prepare fields for play; reset bases and mark lines.
  • Paint walls and other objects; perform minor electrical and plumbing work; set up facilities for events.
  • Operate equipment (aerator, reel mower, fertilizer spreader, etc.), perform light maintenance, and report needed repairs.
  • Follow safety guidelines; work in various locations; communicate with supervisor and associates.

Job description

Performs intermediate manual work performing a variety of park grounds and building maintenance and repair assignments, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Grounds Crew Supervisor.

  • Cleans buildings and offices; dusts furniture, vacuums carpets, and empties garbage cans; sweeps and mops floors; strips and waxes floors; cleans restrooms; picks up litter and debris.
  • Mows and maintains athletic fields, cemeteries, golf course greens, fairways, roughs, and playgrounds; sows grass.
  • Trims hedges and weeds around fences, water hazards, play equipment, and other areas not accessible by mower.
  • Prepares athletic fields for play; marks lines on playing fields; reshapes mounds; resets bases; performs general field maintenance duties; rakes sand traps, fertilizes greens and fairways, pulls out golf carts, and fills water coolers.
  • Paints walls, foul poles, and other objects as instructed.
  • Performs minor electrical and plumbing work on buildings and picnic shelters.
  • Helps set up facilities for meetings and special events.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including aerator, reel gang mower, fertilizer spreader, and pull behind rotary mower, and hand tools in the performance of tasks.
  • Performs light maintenance of tractors and equipment; checks and changes oil, water, and fluid levels; changes filters.
  • Checks and inspects facilities, grounds, and equipment for necessary repairs and replacements; reports unusual observations to supervisor.

High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in general building maintenance, grounds keeping, or parks maintenance work, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Obtain CPR certification within one year of hire. Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina.

General knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment used in general construction, turf grass, horticulture, and maintenance work; general knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently; some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to read and write; ability to read maps and take measurements; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to operate tools and equipment safely; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
