Responsibilities

General Description of Position Under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent, Physical Plant, the Maintenance Worker I is responsible for general maintenance of the SCC fleet of cars, trucks, vans, and buses. At times, this position will also need to provide some skilled levels of maintenance and repairs, facility construction and equipment moving, and grounds work, including mowing. This full-time regular position will need to be able to prioritize work demands and duties as they vary.


Essential Functions


  • Aid in Building/Facilities Maintenance/Remodeling – Disassemble & assemble walls, ceilings, floors, doors, windows, etc. Remove concrete, pour/trowel concrete. Install electrical, plumbing, and heating.

  • Moving Furniture/Equipment – Move furniture/equipment within facilities, as well as to and from storage areas, and keep records on items being moved. These items include: tables and chairs, file cabinets, desks, lockers, instructional equipment, and office equipment.

  • Maintain records as directed and appropriate.

  • Service, wash, clean, and prepare for service the SCC fleet of cars, trucks, vans, and bus(es) as needed.

  • Remove snow using snow equipment as needed across the campus roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and stairs using powered and hand equipment. The equipment used could be one or all of:

    • Tractor with blade

    • Truck with plow

    • Sand truck

    • Manual shovel



  • Operate equipment including trucks, automobiles, and tractors. If needed, operate forklifts.

  • Climb ladders to perform tasks such as changing light bulbs, gaining access to equipment and roofs.

Marginal Functions


  • Preps and paints interior and exterior trim, walls, siding and woodwork using powered and hand tools.

  • Do a wide variety of general maintenance and custodial tasks as needed.

  • May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.

  • Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.

  • Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Knowledge of methods, practices, tools, skills, and materials used in various craft jobs.

  • Knowledge of work standards and practices associated with various craft jobs.

  • Knowledge of some safety hazards, OSHA , and fire codes involved in maintenance and repair activities, as well as precautionary methods to be taken.

  • Ability to inspect a wide variety of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and other equipment and fixtures to determine defects and needed repairs.

  • Ability to maintain and repair shop equipment and tools.


PHYSCIAL DEMANDS


  • Stand on feet for extended periods of time

  • Ability to get into and out of equipment and operate the equipment

  • Walk on hard and rock surfaces

  • Lift 80 pounds on a regular basis

  • Carry 50 pounds on a regular basis

  • Push objects weighing 100 pounds on a regular basis

  • Bend, stoop, or squat to floor level on a repetitive basis

  • Hand-eye coordination to operate equipment

  • Reach overhead on a repetitive basis

  • Climb on ladders to heights of 12 feet

  • Work outside under extreme hot and cold conditions

  • Work in areas involving dust, odors, fumes, and gases

  • Work in areas with noises which may require the use of hearing protection

  • The individual must possess the skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.


Minimum Qualifications


  • High school degree or GED .

  • Two (2) years of experience in a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction activities in any one of the following: carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical repair, or a closely related field.

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and the ability to qualify for auto insurance.


Forklift certification will be needed if required to operate forklifts.


Desired Qualifications


  • AAS degree in Automotive Technology, Auto Collision Repair Technology, Building Construction Technology, or other AAS -related degrees

  • Locksmithing experience.


Salary

$18.62 per hour


Benefits

SCC BEN Dollars – Eligible Employees: Full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee’s paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College’s contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account ( GRA ).


Schedule Normal working hours for this full-time regular position are scheduled between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, requiring a minimum of a 40-hour workweek, based on a 260-day work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek.
