Job summary

Harford County Government is seeking a Building Maintenance Helper to assist the Building Construction and Repair Supervisor and journeyman Building Maintenance Mechanic. You will perform routine semi-skilled tasks across carpentry, drywall, painting, floors, and grounds maintenance under supervision.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of building maintenance experience.

Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of building trades and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate hand tools and ground tools safely.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 100 pounds.
  • Valid Class C driver's license required.
  • Non-CDL Medical Certification to be obtained within six months.
  • High school diploma or GED required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform minor tasks in repair and renovation in carpentry, drywall, drop ceilings, floors, painting, and finishes under close supervision.
  • Assist in more difficult tasks in building trades as needed.
  • Keep equipment in safe and proper working order and operate power tools.
  • Move and transport office furniture and surplus items as required.
  • Drive a County vehicle while carrying out assignments.
  • Follow safety regulations and guidelines.

Job Description Summary:This is semi-skilled work as a helper to the Building Construction and Repair Supervisor, and/or journeyman Building Maintenance Mechanic. An employee in this class performs routine semi-skilled tasks in a variety of building trades and in grounds maintenance. Tasks are performed under the general supervision of either a Maintenance Mechanic or Lead Maintenance Worker depending on the area of work. Incumbents in this class may perform routine tasks independently, with completed tasks being inspected by a supervisor.Job Description:Salary Range: $37,139.00-$99,026.00**BUDGETED SALARY: $39,500.00/ANNUALLY**Essential Duties:**(The following examples illustrate the work performed in the positions in the class. Positions may require some or all of these examples depending on the organization of work within the department. The list is not inclusive. A position may require duties not listed, if necessary, to accomplish the work of the department.)*** Performs minor tasks in repair and renovation in the areas of carpentry, drywall, drop ceilings, floors, painting, finishing, and/or other trades under close supervision* Assists in the more difficult tasks in any of the building trades* Keeps equipment in safe and proper working order* Operate power tools assigned* Moves and transports office furniture and/or surplus items as required* Drives a County vehicle in carrying out assignments* Other duties as assignedMinimum Qualification Requirements:Examples of Duties:* Thorough knowledge of the common practices, procedures, materials, tools, and equipment used in the building trades and in grounds maintenance* Knowledge of the safety precautions followed in those areas* Skill in the use of hand tools and ground tools* Ability to use and work from a ladder and to work on roofs* Cursory knowledge and understanding of shop drawings and blueprints* Skill in the use of and ability to use and maintain the hand, grounds, and power tools and equipment related to a position assigned under this class* Ability to work effectively with others; to handle all material necessary to accomplish a job assignment* Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions* Ability to reach, grasp, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, and stand for prolonged periods of time* Ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 100 pounds* Ability to work from drawings, sketches, specifications, work orders, and prepare simple work reports* Ability to drive a County vehicle and/or equipment while carrying out some assignments.Education: Possession of a high school diploma, vocational-technical school, or GED certificate.
