MAINTENANCE WORKER
Job Title: General Maintenance Technician
Job Summary:
The General Maintenance Technician performs a wide variety of maintenance, repair, and minor construction tasks across multiple trades, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting, and basic automotive repair. This role supports facility upkeep and functionality at Navy Exchange locations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
HVAC & Refrigeration: Install, maintain, and repair systems such as coolers, freezers, and air conditioners. Troubleshoot and replace components like compressors, thermostats, fans, and belts. Perform operational checks post-repair.
Electrical: Repair or replace wiring, switches, outlets, and fixtures. Diagnose and correct electrical issues using hand tools and basic test equipment (e.g., ammeters).
Plumbing: Maintain and repair utility systems by replacing or sealing defective parts. Install water heaters, disposal units, and faucets using standard plumbing tools and techniques.
Carpentry: Plan, measure, cut, and install structural and finish carpentry components. Build and repair cabinetry, trim, roofing, window frames, and shelving using hand and power tools.
Masonry: Construct and repair structures using brick, block, or stone. Apply mortar and finish joints to blend repairs with existing structures.
Painting: Prepare and paint interior and exterior surfaces ensuring a smooth, protective finish. Maintain painting tools and materials.
Automotive Repair (as needed): Perform minor repairs by replacing or cleaning components such as spark plugs, mufflers, fuel lines, and brake shoes. Use standard automotive diagnostic and repair tools.
General: Maintain cleanliness and organization of storerooms. Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
Regularly stands, stoops, kneels, bends, and climbs.
Lifts and transports materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Works in potentially uncomfortable and physically demanding conditions.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
Indoors typically in adequately ventilated and lighted environments.
Exposed to dust, fumes, loud noise, and power tool hazards.
Risk of cuts, bruises, and falls while handling tools and working at heights.
General Experience:
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in general maintenance practices related to the upkeep of buildings, grounds, fixtures, and equipment.
Education Substitution:
A High School Diploma or GED may substitute for one year of general experience. Partial credit may be given as follows:
1 year of high school education = 3 months of general experience
Up to a maximum of 1 full year of general experience for a completed high school diploma or GED.
Specialized Experience:
Must have three (3) years of experience performing general maintenance tasks involving a variety of trade skills such as:
Air conditioning and refrigeration
Electrical work
Plumbing
Masonry
Painting
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and climb.
Must be capable of working in physically demanding and uncomfortable positions.
Frequently required to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
