Work Hours: 6:30 am - 3:00 pm
Please note that this position requires a rotating on-call schedule and the ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.
In this dynamic role, you'll be:
- On the front lines, performing essential installations and repairs of critical water infrastructure like water mains, valves, and fire hydrants
- Utilizing a variety of specialized tools and equipment to effectively maintain and troubleshoot the city's water distribution system
- Contributing to a team environment that prioritizes safety, quality, and exceptional customer service

High School Diploma or GED and two years of utilities experience or experience related to the fields listed below as shown:
- Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation
- Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction
- Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems
- Farming: manual labor, equipment operating
- Moving Company: labor, truck driver
- General Municipal Worker: utility inspector
- Tech School Student: mechanical
- Firefighter: full or part-time
Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
- Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work
- Following directions to meet standards with attention to detail, proofreading, and error correction in assignments
- Basic mathematical concepts and calculations
- Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices
- Monitoring and maintaining required supplies, materials and inventory
- Basic filing and record-keeping principles for organizing and maintaining documentation
- Comprehending reference books and manuals
- Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations, and standards and their interpretation and implementation
- Performing routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions
- Uses and properties of supplies and equipment
- Operating assigned tools and equipment, including specialized equipment relevant to work performed
- Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications
- Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information, to receive work direction, and to provide customer service
ADA and Other Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exertingup to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
