Job summary

The Tohono O’odham Ki:Ki Association seeks a Maintenance Technician/ locksmith to install, repair, rekey, and maintain mechanical and electronic locking systems across TOKA properties. You will also perform general maintenance tasks including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and more, ensuring security and building integrity.

Required are a high school diploma, locksmith training or equivalent, and 3–5 years of maintenance or locksmith experience.

Position Title: Maintenance Technician

Department: Maintenance

Reports To: Maintenance Manager

Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt

Full-Time/Part-Time: Full Time

Pre-employment Screening Requirements:

The Tohono O’odham Ki:Ki Association conducts pre-employment screening for all positions, which may include a criminal background check, verification of credentials, licenses, certifications, and work history. In addition, a check of names and identification documents is conducted on all new employees to ensure they are legally authorized to work in the United States. All employees are required to successfully pass a drug screening test prior to employment; random drug screening tests may be administered post-employment.

Summary

The Maintenance Technician/Locksmith is responsible for installing, repairing, rekeying, and maintaining mechanical and electronic locking systems across TOKA-managed rental units, administrative buildings, and new construction projects. This position also performs a full range of building and housing maintenance duties, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, roofing, appliance repair, and preventative maintenance.

Locksmith duties are the primary focus of this position; however, the volume of locksmith work may vary. As a result, the employee is expected to perform all Maintenance Technician responsibilities as assigned. This combined role ensures full operational flexibility and supports TOKA’s ongoing security and maintenance needs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Primary Locksmith Duties
  • Install, repair, and replace mechanical locks, deadbolts, door hardware, and security devices.
  • Rekey locks, cut keys, and maintain master key systems according to TOKA protocols.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain electronic locks, keypad systems, and access control devices.
  • Install, adjust, and maintain door closures, panic hardware, interior/exterior doors, and related hardware.
  • Maintain secure storage, tracking, and documentation of keys, fobs, and access cards.
  • Ensure locking systems meet tribal housing standards, building codes, and safety requirements.
  • Respond promptly to tenant lockouts and urgent security issues.
  • Maintain accurate logs of lock changes, key issuance, and security incidents.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance, Construction, and Property Management teams.
Key‑Control Policy & System Development
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for issuing, receiving, storing, securing, and tracking keys, fobs, and access cards.
  • Establish and maintain protocols for master key systems, restricted keys, emergency access, and lost/stolen key procedures.
  • Implement and manage key‑tracking software, including data entry, system updates, reporting, and compliance monitoring.
  • Ensure all key‑control practices meet TOKA security standards, tribal housing requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Train staff on key‑control procedures and software usage as needed.
Maintenance Technician Duties (Required)
  • Maintain and repair electrical, plumbing, solar, structural, and mechanical systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical/plumbing schematics and blueprints.
  • Troubleshoot, dismantle, remodel, repair, reassemble, and install electrical switches.
  • Repair vandalism or storm damage to buildings and housing units.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Repair cabinetry, roofs, sheetrock, ceilings, and flooring.
  • Replace mirrors, windows, interior/exterior doors.
  • Weld and repair doors, gates, fences, and equipment.
  • Paint interior and exterior building surfaces.
  • Maintain, repair, or replace HVAC or swamp cooler systems.
  • Perform concrete repairs including block and/or pouring.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and install stoves, refrigerators, and water heaters.
  • Assist with other trades and maintenance activities.
  • Participate in on‑call rotation as needed.

  • Interpersonal Skills — Maintains professionalism, listens actively, and interacts respectfully with tenants, coworkers, and contractors.
  • Teamwork — Works collaboratively with internal teams to support unit turnover and housing operations.
  • Ethics & Confidentiality — Handles keys, access codes, and security information responsibly; upholds TOKA values.
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED and 3 years of maintenance or construction experience, plus any maintenance‑related training certificate; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of a locksmith training program, technical certificate, or two‑year vocational/technical degree in locksmithing, building maintenance, carpentry, or related field required.
  • Three to five years of locksmith experience (mechanical and/or electronic systems) or equivalent specialized training.
  • Experience developing or implementing key‑control policies, procedures, or tracking systems preferred.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders, keying charts, lock specifications, safety procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to write clear service notes, logs, and incident reports.
  • Ability to understand and speak O’odham preferred.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and use fractions.
  • Comfortable with measurements, pinning charts, and basic geometry.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to diagnose lock malfunctions, evaluate security issues, and determine corrective actions.
  • Ability to apply common‑sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
Computer Skills
  • Basic computer skills; ability to use email, work‑order systems, and electronic key‑control software.
  • Ability to learn and implement key‑tracking software or access‑control systems.
Licenses & Background Requirements
  • Valid Arizona Driver’s License.
  • No DUIs in past three years.
  • Must meet TOKA background standards.
