Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair campus electrical systems and components.
• Install and maintain interior and exterior lighting, sensors, dimmers, and exit signs.
• Perform preventive maintenance to reduce outages and equipment damage.
• Diagnose issues affecting pumps, motors, and campus equipment; assist with generator testing.
• Complete work orders efficiently and coordinate with the Director of Facilities on permits.
• Assist with events, snow removal, and other facilities tasks as needed.

Reports To: Director of Facilities

Focus: Electrical Systems, Lighting, Controls, and General Facilities Maintenance

Summary: The Maintenance Technician – Electrician maintains the functionality, reliability, and safety of Indian Mountain School’s campus electrical systems and equipment. A valid E-1 license issued by the state of Connecticut is required for this hands‑on role focused on electrical troubleshooting, lighting, controls, fixtures, and preventive maintenance across both campuses. The ideal candidate has substantial electrical experience, works independently with strong attention to safety and code compliance, and assists the broader Facilities team as needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Electrical Systems: Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair campus electrical systems and components within the scope of the position, including circuits, wiring, breakers, receptacles, switches, disconnects, and related equipment
• Lighting & Controls: Install, repair, and maintain interior and exterior lighting, occupancy sensors, timers, dimmers, lighting controls, emergency lighting, and illuminated exit signs throughout academic buildings, dormitories, offices, athletic spaces, and grounds
• Preventive Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, identify unsafe or deteriorating electrical conditions, correct deficiencies promptly, and help reduce outages, equipment damage, and disruptions to school operations.
• Equipment & Building Support: Diagnose electrical issues affecting building equipment, kitchen and laundry equipment, pumps, motors, grounds equipment, and other campus systems. Assist with generator testing and other electrical or controls work as assigned
• Maintenance & Operations: Complete assigned work orders efficiently, document recurring issues, maintain orderly work zones, and minimize disruptions to school programs. Recognize when permits, specialized testing, or outside electrical contractors are required and communicate those needs to the Director of Facilities
• Team Collaboration & Campus Support: Assist with special events, seasonal work, snow removal, emergency responses, and general Facilities tasks outside core trade areas
• Safety & Inventory: Follow electrical safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements, applicable codes, and campus safety protocols. Maintain clean work areas, track electrical parts and supplies, and report equipment or inventory needs to the Director of Facilities

Qualifications & Requirements

• Significant professional experience performing electrical installation, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance in commercial, institutional, or residential facilities
• Strong working knowledge of electrical systems, circuits, wiring methods, lighting, controls, motors, test equipment, and safe work practices
• Ability to read electrical diagrams, identify faults, estimate materials, and complete repairs neatly and efficiently
• Current Connecticut electrical trade license (E-1) is required. Ability to identify work requiring permits, specialized testing, or an outside licensed contractor is required
• Clear communication, strong time management, independent problem-solving, and a professional attitude around students, staff, and visitors
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Ability to lift, carry, and move 50+ lbs
• Ability to climb ladders, bend, kneel, crawl, and work in confined spaces and at heights in all weather conditions
• Exposure to typical maintenance environments, including dust, noise, odors, electrical equipment, mechanical rooms, and confined spaces
• Ability to use electrical meters, testing devices, hand tools, power tools, ladders, and lifts safely
