Job summary

Koch Fertilizer in Wever, IA is seeking a Maintenance Technician Intern for Summer 2027 to learn in an industrial setting with no prior experience required. This internship provides hands-on exposure to maintenance work, collaboration with seasoned teams, and insight into plant operations.

The 12-week program runs from late May to early August 2027 with a 4‑day, 10‑hour shift schedule. You will gain experience across rotating and fixed equipment, while developing problem-solving and teamwork

• Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of a relevant degree, certificate, or workforce training program.
• Willing and able to meet all physical requirements.
• Legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Gain hands-on experience on projects representative of full-time maintenance professionals.
• Troubleshoot equipment issues and improve reliability with maintenance and operations teams.
• Assist with inspection and maintenance of fixed equipment (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, tanks, boilers, furnaces, heaters).
• Assist with installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of rotating equipment (pumps, compressor systems).
• Support equipment reliability and plant performance through preventive maintenance.

What You Will Do

• Gain hands-on experience working on projects that are representative of the work our full-time maintenance professionals perform.
• Partner with maintenance and operations teams to troubleshoot equipment issues and improve reliability across the facility.
• Support the inspection and maintenance of fixed equipment such as pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks, boilers, furnaces, and heaters.
• Assist with the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of rotating equipment, including pumps and compressor systems.
• Work alongside our maintenance team to support equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and plant performance through predictive and preventive maintenance activities.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Bending, kneeling, lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to climb straight ladders. Some work may require heights in excess of 100 feet.
• Wearing industrial chemical plant uniforms and PPE as required.
• Confined space entry may be required.
• Ability to work in an industrial environment which includes availability for shift work and emergency call outs, while working indoors and outdoors

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

• Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of a relevant degree, certificate, or workforce training program
• Legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship
• Willing and able to meet all physical requirements

What Will Put You Ahead

• Currently enrolled in programs such as Welding, Industrial Maintenance, Auto/diesel Tech, Mechanical Maintenance, Advanced Manufacturing, etc.
• Previous experience working in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.
• Previous armed forces experience as an aircraft mechanic, aircraft structural maintenance specialist, or other relevant military experience
• Experience maintaining or repairing rotating or fixed equipment.
