Job summary

viaPhoton is seeking an Automation Maintenance Technician in Naperville, IL to build and maintain automation equipment for high-precision systems. You will diagnose and repair issues hands-on, realign optics, and recalibrate sensors to ensure peak production performance.

This role interfaces with engineers and operators daily. You will use calipers, feeler gauges, microscopes, and other tools to maintain tight tolerances and verify component alignment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering on file.
• 1–2 years hands-on engineering experience in a technical setting.
• Exposure to mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Build and assemble custom automation equipment across mechanical, electrical, and optical domains.
• Diagnose and repair equipment issues hands-on, replacing parts and realigning components.
• Calibrate equipment with precision using calipers, feeler gauges, and microscopes.
• Collaborate with engineers and operators to translate observations into actions.
• Maintain equipment and support production with troubleshooting.

Job description

Location: Naperville, IL

Schedule: Mon–Fri | Onsite

Compensation: $30.00 to $37.00 per hour depending on experience and certifications, plus a $2,000 prepaid card for medical expenses (prorated based on start date)

About the Role

You're a hands-on problem solver who likes diagnosing and repairing sensitive, high-precision hardware. You'll build and maintain automation equipment from the ground up, troubleshoot multi-system issues, and work alongside engineers to keep our equipment running at peak performance. This is detail-oriented work where your technical skills directly impact production.

• Build and assemble custom automation equipment from the ground up, including mechanical, electrical, and optical components
• Diagnose and repair equipment issues hands-on, replacing parts, re-soldering connections, realigning optics, and recalibrating sensors
• Calibrate and maintain equipment within precise tolerances using tools like calipers, feeler gauges, and microscopes
• Work across hardware domains including cameras and lenses, machined parts, computer components, electrical systems, and 3D-printed parts
• Troubleshoot alongside engineers and interface with operators to translate floor-level observations into actionable diagnostic information

What You'll Bring

• Have a bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, or a related field (a plus, but not required)
• Have 1 to 2 years of hands-on experience in a technical or engineering environment
• Have exposure to multiple engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, software)
• Are familiar with diagnostic tools like multimeters, calipers, feeler gauges, and microscopes
• Can read electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, and communicate findings clearly to engineers and operators
