Job summary

Penobscot Valley Hospital is seeking a Maintenance Technician for night shift (Mon night–Thu night, 10:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m.), full-time, 32 hours per week. The role focuses on facility upkeep, floor care, painting, snow removal and general maintenance across hospital buildings.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, repairs, and supporting environmental services. A High School Diploma and valid Maine driver’s license are required, with shift flexibility for vacation coverage as needed.

PVH employment application required. All job offers contingent upon background check and completion of pre-employment physical.

Full-time, 32 hours per week, night shift Monday night through Thursday night, 10:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m.
Hourly, non-exempt, union; shift differential as worked.

While the employee is responsible for all duties outlined in the Maintenance Technician job description, this position will have a primary focus on facility upkeep and support, including maintaining the hospital’s floor care and polishing schedule, patching and painting throughout hospital buildings, trash removal, winter plowing, salting and sanding, and completing preventive maintenance work as time and scheduling allow.

This position may also be required to occasionally work or cover day-shift hours to provide departmental coverage for vacations, staffing needs, or other operational needs.

JOB FUNCTIONS

A. Supports a building maintenance program (for multiple buildings):

  1. Conducts daily rounds and recordings for oxygen & temperature readings; checks all mechanical equipment per rounding sheets
  2. Completes work orders as assigned (to include all aspects of maintenance: preventive, predictive, repair and break-in work). The list below is not all inclusive but provides an example of the type of work that can be expected:
  3. Mechanical work (pumps, motors, fans, bearings, belts, hoses, and lubrication)
  4. Plumbing (fixture installation and repair, general piping repairs, unclogging pipes)
  5. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)
  6. Assisting the electrician as necessary
  7. Painting
  8. Snow removal, salting, sanding, etc.
  9. General grounds maintenance, including seasonal duties, such as plowing and snow removal
  10. General building construction
  11. Troubleshoots and repairs equipment as necessary
  12. Collects and handles disposal of all trash (as needed)
  13. Collects and handles disposal of all “Red Bag” waste (as needed)
  14. Performs floor care (sweeping, vacuuming, stripping, and waxing as necessary)
  15. Conducts preventive and corrective projects for maintenance (hospital wide)
  16. Performs general courier functions including, but not limited to, delivering materials between buildings, transporting lab specimens and picking up/dropping off bank deposits
  17. Performs shredding collections duties

B. Supports security and safety:

  1. Conducts rounds to check the building during shift hours
  2. Completes daily activity sheets
  3. Occasionally required to observe a patient who may be confused, combative, agitated, or considered a safety concern to themselves or others
  4. Consistently utilizes safe driving practices when driving any hospital vehicle

C. Other:

  1. Assists with any off site needs that might occur
  2. Assists Environmental Services Technicians as needed
  3. Assists with moving equipment or furniture as needed
  4. Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling by working with department leadership to create snow plowing and removal plans; this may require temporarily moving from day to night hours.
  5. Maintains reliable phone communications to ensure receipt of messages from emergency messaging services utilized by the Hospital.
  6. Communicates respectfully and thoroughly with all staff and leadership levels

Quality Improvement: Actively participates in the Hospital-wide Quality Improvement Program, actively supports and implements Department-specific Quality improvement initiatives and projects, recommends process improvement as appropriate, reports any quality issues in service delivery and consistently commits to a focus on quality improvement and organizational excellence.

Emergency Management: As an employee of Penobscot Valley Hospital, the position has an inherent role to care for our community members when in need. To this regard, the incumbent will be expected to participate in emergency/disaster preparedness planning and drills as requested. When called upon during a real life disaster/emergency event, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the Hospital’s response to this event, within the scope of professional and personal ability to do so.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent and a current Maine Driver’s license required. Knowledge of commercial floor care, HVAC, construction, carpentry, grounds maintenance, and ability to read blue prints preferred.
