Job summary

Murfreesboro City Schools is seeking a Maintenance Technician to keep district buildings safe and functional. The role focuses on doors, locks and related building trades, with duties including general repairs and preventive maintenance under supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Qualified applicants will have a high school diploma or GED, three years of maintenance experience, and a valid driver’s license. The position is hourly, non-exempt, and includes benefits, with twelve-month terms.

Responsibilities

  • Observe safety rules and maintain safe conditions for equipment and structures in the area of expertise.
  • Assume primary responsibility for safe operation of district equipment and facilities.
  • Contribute to a preventive maintenance program for assigned areas.
  • Perform repairs in doors, locks, electrical, plumbing and general building trades as needed.
  • Record new tools/equipment into inventory and maintain orderly work areas.
  • Assist other personnel and trades to support completion of tasks.
  • Respond to emergencies to resolve safety concerns.
  • Transport materials and equipment to job sites as required.
  • Work outside in varied weather, heights, and confined spaces; overtime may occur.

Position Summary: The maintenance technician position primary responsibility will be to ensure exterior and interior doors and locks are operating as they should. Other responsibilities would include performing general maintenance duties such as minor building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing repairs as necessary to district owned buildings.

Qualifications: Completion of high school/GED and three years related maintenance work experience. Valid Driver's license.

Other Qualifications: The person in this position must be able to effectively and safely use the tools and equipment of the trade or craft of expertise; read, listen, understand and follow oral and written instruction including but not limited to technical manuals, charts and terms related to the trade or craft; be able to work well with people; be able to appropriately and efficiently work as a team; be courteous to children and adults and use only language and behaviors appropriate to a school setting. This person must be honest, trustworthy and motivated to do timely and good quality work without close supervision; be punctual and consistent in work habits and attendance. Must be willing to occasionally work unusual hours in crisis situations.

Physical Demands: The person in this position must have and maintain the intellectual, sensory, emotional and physical abilities necessary for the effective and safe performance of duty; be a safe driver; be able to occasionally lift and carry objects which exceed fifty (50) pounds and frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds. This person must be able to drive a variety of vehicles, push, pull, stoop, kneel, reach, grasp, talk, hear, climb and crawl; work in extreme temperatures; tolerate dust, chemicals and other substances and environmental conditions associated with maintenance work; be emotionally mature, able to work cooperatively, cope with stress appropriately and abruptly change tasks in a composed manner.

Essential Job Functions: The Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing the work necessary in the respective area of expertise. Job functions include, but are not limited to:

  1. Observe all safety rules.
  2. Assume primary responsibility for the safe condition of all equipment or structures in area of expertise.
  3. Help maintain an effective preventive maintenance program for area of responsibility.
  4. Works in one or more building trades (doors, locks and keys, general construction, electrical, and plumbing) to keep district owned buildings in safe and operable conditions.
  5. Enter any newly purchased tools or equipment into inventory.
  6. Keep work area clean and orderly.
  7. Repairs furniture, floors, roofs, floor tiles, cabinets, ceilings, walls, door locks, electrical, plumbing, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safe and efficient utilization of the buildings.
  8. Responds to emergency situation, sometimes outside of their normal classification, for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
  9. Transports materials, supplies and equipment, to and from job sites to complete tasks.
  10. Works outside in all weather conditions, heights and in enclosed spaces with limited access.
  11. Occasionally, works overtime, including weekends.
  12. Assists other personnel and trades, as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  13. Ensures work vehicle is always cleaned and maintained properly.

Perform other duties as needed for the efficient operation of the school district.

Staff Relationship: Reports directly to the Supervisor of Maintenance

Terms of Employment: Twelve (12) months, hourly rate and benefits set annually. Non-exempt.
