Job summary

Milton Academy is seeking a Maintenance Technician to perform general repairs and preventive maintenance across all Academy properties. Responsibilities

  • Performs general repairs of physical plant buildings and grounds (sheetrock, plastering, painting, carpentry, glass, repairs).
  • Assists in preventative maintenance and repairs of buildings and equipment.
  • Advise supervisor on preventive maintenance inspections and actions.
  • Conducts daily/weekly campus tours of mechanical spaces and grounds to identify deficiencies.
  • Responds to service calls for HVAC, plumbing, lighting, carpentry and painting duties; moves items safely.
  • Communicates work status and updates to supervisor; documents work orders.
  • Keeps up with safety/code changes; seeks continuing education.
  • Supports projects with materials lists and technical input; may assist vendors.

Summary of Position:

The Maintenance Technician performs general repairs for physical plant and building operations for all Academy properties. Performs maintenance and mechanical Inspection on equipment utilizing results-oriented strategies to ensure continuing operation. Uses experience and technical skills with preventive maintenance and system operations to determine service requirements. In addition, it is a benefit if the individual has a working knowledge of small equipment (e.g., mowers, weed wackers, gators), with the ability to troubleshoot and repair on-site. The individual in this position must work collaboratively with the Facilities Services team and have a customer service orientation to working with students, faculty, and staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Performs general repairs of physical plant buildings and grounds, such as sheetrock, plastering, painting, general carpentry, glass, and screen repairs.
  • Assists in the preventative maintenance and repairs of buildings both commercial and residential. Including but not limited to general equipment repairs, belt adjustments, oiling, greasing and cleaning of equipment or replacement of various types of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Advises supervisor of preventive maintenance inspections performed and corrective actions to be taken. Suggests additional service/renovation requirements.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on various mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Conducts daily/weekly tours of entire campus, including mechanical spaces, tenant/public areas, roofs and building grounds to ensure that there are no outstanding deficiencies.
  • Respond to service calls/tenant requests for HVAC, plumbing, lighting, escorts, general carpentry & painting duties, key making, picture hanging, safely move furniture and equipment as needed, and provide support or assistance when needed.
  • Communicate with the supervisor on the work performed and present status of the work orders.
  • Stays abreast of changes (safety and code) in their respective field of expertise through seminars and other educational means.
  • Provides information for input to client work order tracking system to initiate work orders for unscheduled jobs, develop materials lists for ordering, and may be required to provide technical support for projects.
  • Responds to emergencies and traces, troubleshoots and repairs problems; may wear a pager and/or carry a shop radio for rapid response.
  • Conducts general housekeeping to mechanical/electrical rooms including sweeping, mopping and painting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervision to be received:

This position reports to the Assistant Director of Building Operations.

Supervision to be exercised:

There are no direct reports for this position. That said, the successful candidate must collaborate with other technicians and trades, as well as external vendors.

Education/Certification/Licensure

Required: A valid driver’s license.

Preferred: Certification from a technical school.

Experience

Required: A minimum of 3 years of related experience or training.

Documented experience in repairing small equipment, along with a solid understanding of the decision-making process between repair and replacement.

Preferred: 5 years of related experience or training.

  • Must be physically able to move around the Milton Academy campus without restriction.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance on ladders, staging, and power platforms.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be comfortable working in various environmental conditions, such as unconditioned spaces and outdoor environments.
  • Must be able to distinguish sounds and communicate effectively to diagnose equipment and coordinate with team members.
  • Adherence to safety protocols, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), is essential.
