Job summary

Smurfit Westrock Company is seeking a Maintenance Technician II to help maintain the reliability, performance, and safety of our manufacturing equipment. You will troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical systems, support preventive maintenance, and help minimize downtime across production operations.

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of industrial maintenance experience with mechanical and/or electrical systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, manuals, and maintenance documentation.
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and basic machine shop equipment.
  • Willingness to work overtime and non-standard hours; operate forklifts and aerial lifts safely.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and material handling equipment to support safe and reliable plant operations.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance activities to maximize equipment uptime.
  • Inspect production equipment and systems to identify potential failures, safety hazards, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and mechanical drawings to support troubleshooting, repairs, and equipment installations.
  • Fabricate, weld, assemble, and modify mechanical components, guards, brackets, and related equipment as needed.
  • Utilize maintenance management systems and computer-based tools to document work performed, submit parts requests, and maintain accurate maintenance records.
  • Support and mentor Maintenance Technician I team members through training, guidance, and knowledge sharing.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, continuous improvement, and operational excellence while ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures.

As a Maintenance Technician II, you will play a critical role in maintaining the reliability, performance, and safety of our manufacturing equipment. You will troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical systems, support preventive maintenance efforts, and help minimize downtime across production operations. Working alongside experienced maintenance professionals, you will contribute to a safe, efficient, and productive manufacturing environment while continuing to develop your technical skills and expertise.

How You Will Make an Impact

What You Need to Succeed
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of two years of industrial maintenance experience with mechanical and/or electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of industrial mechanical and electrical troubleshooting and repair techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and maintenance documentation.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and basic machine shop equipment.
  • Basic welding and metal fabrication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to document maintenance activities electronically.
  • Ability to work overtime, respond to emergency maintenance situations, and support non-standard business hours as needed.
  • Ability to safely operate maintenance-related equipment such as forklifts, aerial lifts, and personnel transport vehicles.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to all company policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical, vocational, or trade school training in industrial maintenance, mechanical maintenance, electrical systems, mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, packaging, paper, corrugated, or industrial production environment.
  • Experience with preventive maintenance programs, CMMS systems, and equipment reliability initiatives.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, conveyor, motor control, and automated manufacturing systems.
  • Electrical authorization, journeyman certification, or other maintenance-related certifications.
  • Experience training or mentoring junior maintenance technicians.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, and work in industrial manufacturing environments for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment in accordance with plant safety guidelines.
  • Ability to work around moving machinery, elevated platforms, noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and work safely in an industrial environment.

The starting rate is $30-$32 per hour, depending on your role, level, and location. The benefits for this role may include short-term bonus incentive, health, dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and paid sick leave as required by applicable state/local law, 10 days of paid vacation, and 11 days of paid holidays, subject to annual change. Your actual pay will be based on your work location and other factors, such as your skills, experience, and education.
