Job description

Under general supervision, directs and oversees the work of a staff in maintaining assigned County building and grounds. Performs routine custodial, maintenance and other maintenance duties; requisitions supplies and prepares routine activity reports. Reports to the Director of Construction and Maintenance.

  • Directs, oversees, and assists the work of trades worker(s) in maintaining assigned County buildings. Performs such supervisory duties as instructing; assigning and reviewing work of others; maintaining standards; and acting on employee problems; etc. May assist in selecting new employees and may recommend transfers, promotions, disciplinary actions and discharges.
  • Oversees and/or performs various maintenance tasks including, installing doors, locks, keys, access control systems, signs, fencing, overhead doors, automatic gates, etc.
  • Ensures that equipment and materials are available for completion of jobs. Requisitions equipment and materials as needed.
  • Inspects job in progress for quality, safety and adherence to established schedules, budget, and guidelines.
  • Maintains records of work orders, key holders, access logs, etc.
  • Utilizes a variety of tools and equipment in the performance of the job including a vehicle, key machine, powered saws, computers, yard tools, hand tools, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as supervisor(s), County department heads and employees, and the public.

Has working knowledge of departmental methods and activities as they pertain to the specific duties of the position. Knows how to perform routine duties required to maintain neatness of grounds. Has knowledge of and is skilled in using various supplies. Is skilled in using various types of lawn and garden equipment, as well as certain carpenter’s tools and some mechanic’s tools. Is able to maintain an organized and clean work area in order to promote safe and efficient operations. Is able to follow oral and written instructions and assume responsibility for the completion of assignments. Knows how to complete daily activities in a timely manner as prescribed. Has the ability to apply common sense understanding in performing tasks, and is able to use independent judgment in routine situations. Has the ability to communicate and coordinate in an effective manner with supervisors, co-workers, subordinates, and the general public. Knows how to operate and maintain various tools and equipment used in the completion of specific duties. Is knowledgeable of the various chemicals used on the job and is able to utilize such in a safe and effective manner. Has the ability to supervise other employees, ensuring that they complete jobs efficiently and properly. Has the ability to perform required duties and responsibilities in adverse weather conditions such as heat, cold, wetness, and humidity. Has the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Has the ability to offer instruction and advice to subordinates regarding departmental policies, methods and regulations. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.

  • Requires high school diploma and three to five years of general maintenance experience, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • May be required to possess a valid SC driver’s license.
  • Have already or be able to acquire a “Locksmith’s Certificate” within the first six (6) months.
