  • Operate various tools and machines; ensure safety in use and handling.
  • Set up for special events and assist County Council and officials professionally.
  • Maintain security procedures for sensitive areas and inventory common garage door parts.

Job description

Under general supervision, assists skilled craftsmen in performing a variety of building maintenance and repair duties in such areas as hardware repair and installation, locksmith, garage door repair and installation, light carpentry, computer skills, working with various security system software programs, sign making, and be able to independently assess requirements for repair activities.


  • Assists skilled craftsmen in performing a variety of building maintenance and repair duties in the areas of hardware.


  • Receives, reviews, processes, files and/or submits a variety of documents and reports including work orders, blueprints, mileage sheets, daily logs, time sheets, etc.

  • Utilizes an assortment of types of machinery and equipment in the performance of daily tasks including vehicles, power tools, carpenter’s tools, key cutting machines, vinyl cutting machines, table saw, sanders etc.

  • Exercises care and safety in the use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks.

  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as supervisor, County department heads and employees, co-workers, etc. in a neat and professional manner.

  • The ability to perform basic computer skills and be able to learn the software applications that apply to this division.

  • Must be able to set up for special events and assist County Council and other elected officials in a professional manner.

  • Must be able to maintain and follow certain security procedures and policies in sensitive secure areas.

  • Must be able to diagnose, repair and/or replace different types of garage doors and appurtenances.

  • Create and maintain an inventory of common garage door parts.


Requires knowledge of procedures, policies, protocols, methods, materials and equipment used in the maintenance department as they pertain to the specific duties and responsibilities of this position. Has considerable knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of County and other governmental agencies. Has comprehensive knowledge of the computer and other technical terminology used within the department. Is able to offer assistance and training to fellow employees as needed. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Requires a valid S.C. driver’s license and high school diploma with five (5) years of practical training and or experience in performing similar general maintenance and repair activities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Garage door installation and repair experience strongly preferred.
