Job description

The City of Caldwell Parks Department is looking to add four Seasonal Maintenance Specialist I to their team this busy season. This is a seasonal position that will run for about 7-8 months. 40-hour work week. The schedule is Monday through Thursday 06:00AM to 4:30PM. This seasonal position does not include benefits nor PERSI. The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform manual work associated with the repair, maintenance and beautification of city parks, buildings, and related areas. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the park's superintendent. Employees in this classification are entry-level and perform basic park maintenance. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment, which may involve adverse weather conditions and related hazards.

Responsibilities
  • Plants trees, bushes and other plants and grass;
  • Mows, waters, and rakes grass;
  • Trims fence lines and the banks of drainage ditches;
  • Collects litter and debris;
  • Empties park garbage cans and hauls the collected waste to the parks dumpster;
  • Uses hand tools such as picks, shovels and rakes;
  • Operates power equipment, including chain saws, edgers, weed eaters, push and riding mowers, back hoes and field painters;
  • Informs supervisor of any needed repairs and/or maintenance;
  • Cleans and weeds flower beds, mulches around flowers and waters as appropriate;
  • Prunes flowers and related shrubbery as necessary;
  • Cleans and paints concession stands, field houses and related Parks and Recreation facilities;
  • May assist in repairs of windows, doors, and other fixtures;
  • Assists in performing installation of water lines, irrigation systems, fencing, tee boxes, flag poles, benches and picnic tables;
  • Monitors and maintains equipment in a safe operating condition and reports all damages to supervisor;
  • Checks and maintains air, oil, fuel, spark plugs, mower blades, tires etc.;
  • Cleans equipment and work area;
  • Assists in the sets up of City holiday lights display;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends approved meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and/or Experience Required:

  • At least 6 months of work experience involving landscaping, mowing, operating sprinkler systems and/or outdoor maintenance

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:

  • 18 years of age
  • Possession of valid driver’s license
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, drug testing, and physical
