SUMMARY

Responsible for planning and implementing routine and necessary maintenance, maintaining grounds and facility operations for all Head Start buildings throughout the three county service areas. Directs and coordinates operational activities of maintenance staff across the three counties, by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Primary

  • Develops and maintains a routine, preventative, written maintenance plan for all facilities (indoors and outdoors)
  • Schedules any needed building repairs or service in a timely manner
  • Checks all billings to verify that charges are correct for work completed by outside service providers
  • Coordinates training for custodial staff on use of maintenance equipment and supplies
  • Makes any needed repairs on buildings or vehicles or schedule outside repairperson if needed
  • Orders maintenance supplies for all facilities and delivers to sites, as needed
  • Coordinates and supervises routine floor maintenance in all facilities
  • Conducts annual safety inspections of all facilities to insure health, safety, and well-being of children and staff
  • Monitors buildings regularly to ensure compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and North Carolina Day Care Licensing regulations
  • Maintains organized, written logs on maintenance and repairs of all faculties

Secondary

  • Attends all scheduled pre-service and in-service trainings, as well as staff meetings

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

FACILITIES, MATERIALS, AND EQUIPMENT

Provides a physical environment that is conducive to learning and reflective of the different stages of development of children.

Provides for the maintenance, repair, safety, and security of all Head Start facilities, materials, and equipment.

Maintains an environment free of toxins, including cigarette smoke, pesticides, herbicides, and other air pollutant, as well as soil and water contaminants.

Conducts an annual safety inspection to ensure that each facility’s space, light, ventilation, heat, and other physical arrangements are consistent with the health, safety, and developmental needs of children.

Provides and arranges sufficient equipment, toys, materials, and furniture to meet the needs and facilitate the participation of adults and children.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Preferred:Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; Required:and three to five years' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Employee must pass an annual physical, TB screening, submit to random drug screenings.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Incumbent must demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of building and landscape maintenance and a working knowledge of transportation and planning. Employee must be able to operate with proficiency power tool and hand tools associated with general maintenance and landscape management; and operate a desktop computer, related software, printer, copier, fax, and phone.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Incumbent must possess/maintain or obtain/maintain within 90 days of employment a current CDL and a valid drivers' license.
