Job summary

Kodiak Island Borough is seeking a skilled maintenance technician to perform complex upkeep and operations across Borough facilities. This role includes custodial duties, security program administration, and hands-on trades work in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and boiler systems.

Incumbents may be involved in maintaining gas/diesel vehicles, inputting data, and preparing logs and records. Some assignments may include advanced seawater-related tasks such as pumps and wells.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED and 6 years of trades experience (or equivalent) to perform required duties.
• Experience in multiple trades and ability to operate and troubleshoot building systems.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and perform preventative maintenance on facilities systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and security.
• Perform interior and exterior maintenance, carpentry, painting, and grounds upkeep.
• Maintain and repair gas and diesel vehicles; input data into computer systems and prepare logs/records.
• Assist with monitoring seawater related systems when assigned.

Job description

This class is the first level in a two level Maintenance series. Incumbents are responsible for performing complex maintenance and/or operational activities in assigned area of responsibility. Responsibilities include: performing facility custodial activities; administering security program; performing journey-level carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, mechanical and boiler work; maintaining and repairing gas and diesel automobiles; inputting data into computerized systems; and, preparing logs and records. Based on assignment, advanced plumbing activities related to sea water, pumps, wells, shafts, and labs may be required.

DUTIES

• The class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department.
• Inspects, coordinates and performs preventative maintenance to facilities systems including: HVAC and refrigeration; plumbing; mechanical; electrical; and other assigned systems.
• Performs general interior and exterior building maintenance including finish carpentry and painting. Moves furniture and equipment as required.
• Performs maintenance of parks, grounds, walkways, driveways and access points. Performs landscape maintenance including grass cutting, weed removal, fertilizing and plant/tree maintenance. Inspects and repairs park equipment. Performs trash, snow and ice removal. May oversee grounds keeping activities of temporary workers.
• Performs routine maintenance of gas and diesel vehicles including: changing oils and lubricants; repairing and rotating tires; and performing general tuning service work. Coordinates collision and heavy repair work.
• Administers and maintains security controls. Programs key-card access, maintains keys and key logs. Performs locksmith functions.
• Monitors and maintains surplus equipment and furniture inventories. Delivers and transports equipment and supplies. Prepares activity logs and records and inputs data into computer systems.
• Performs or assists in monitoring ocean tidal movements, seawater well pumps, seawater levels and flow.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED and 6 years of trades experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS

• State of Alaska Drivers License.
• Depending on area of assignment, ability to Obtain 40 Hour HazWoper Certification;
• Confined Space Entry Certification;
• Forklift Certification;
