Job summary

The Texas Department of Transportation Amarillo District is seeking a Transportation Maintenance Specialist VII to assist the Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing roadway maintenance crews and contracted work, ensuring a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area.   • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Six years of roadway maintenance or construction experience, substitution allowed with related college education or training on a year-for-year basis.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to drive a state vehicle; CDL preferred.
  • Substitutions for minimum qualifications may be allowed with college education or relevant training.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in budget preparation for the section.
  • Oversees work of the section and contracted crews including scheduling equipment, material and personnel.
  • Completes reports on damaged railings and bridges.
  • Ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Leads the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staff.
  • May operate light and heavy roadway equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Assists a Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing work completed by the crews and contractors, which provides a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Leads the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staff. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties
  • Assists in budget preparation for the section.
  • Assists the maintenance section supervisor in overseeing the work of the section and contracted crews including scheduling equipment, material and personnel necessary for section projects.
  • Completes reports on damaged railings and bridges.
  • Ensures all projects follow established safety guidelines.
  • Handles public complaints.
  • Leads the work of transportation maintenance crews and support staff.
  • May operate light and heavy roadway equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education

Experience

6 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction related work (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent) Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices

  • Methods and procedures involving storage & transport of hazardous materials

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
  • Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts
